This inspiring book introduces the psychologies of womanists and mujeristas-African American women and Latinas, respectively, who have a broad and inclusive approach to feminism and liberation. Womanist and mujerista values and worldviews emphasize resiliency, strength, activism, self-expression, creativity, spirituality/connection, self-definition, and liberation of all oppressed people. As opposed to much general psychology literature that pathologizes or marginalizes the experiences of African American women and Latinas, this book centralizes their experiences and unpacks the underexplored areas of their historical and contemporary ways of knowing and approaches to living. The chapters integrate findings from multiple disciplines to explore psychology, spirituality, creativity, activism, counseling, healing, research, and leadership from a womanist and mujerista perspective.

In this compelling book, Joan Chrisler and Ingrid Johnston-Robledo examine how women relate to their bodies and how attitudes toward the body affect women amp rsquo s sense of self. In particular, they document the disturbing, never-ending barrage of standards used to judge women amp rsquo s bodies. For example, women are taught that their bodies should be beautiful (but not as a result of too much effort), sexy (but not slutty), pure (but not prudish), slender (but curvy in the right places), youthful (if they are adults), mature (if they are adolescents), feminine, healthy, and able-bodied. These impossible standards prompt women to pursue life-long body improvement projects---which leads to self-objectification or a negative embodied self. The authors review the research on these phenomena and analyze them through the lens of various psychological theories, including objectification theory, stigma theory, terror management theory, and stereotype embodiment theory. Importantly, they then suggest ways to help women and girls achieve a positive embodied self, which includes challenging and resisting pressures to alter and discipline their bodies in unhealthy ways.

This book presents groundbreaking scholarship on new approaches to women amp rsquo s psychology. Transnational psychology pushes beyond traditional Western, androcentric frameworks to provide theorists, researchers, and practitioners with tools to identify and deconstruct hegemonies, give voice to the marginalized, and critically examine the dynamic nature of identity in local and global contexts. Contributors to this book represent a diverse array of viewpoints originating in postcolonial, postmodern, Third World and Women of Color feminist scholarship, intersectionality and critical race theory, as well as scholarship addressing the impact of globalization. Chapters explain how transnational perspectives can address a range of topics including human trafficking, sexuality, migration, human rights, healing, empowerment, domestic violence, education, and work. The book concludes with chapters on teaching these approaches, and a roadmap for the future of this growing field of study.

This second edition provides a comprehensive, social ecological review of women's rape and sexual assault disclosures and how support providers can better respond to them and challenge rape culture. Women who have been raped and sexually assaulted are often retraumatized by negative social reactions from family and friends, healthcare professionals, institutions, and society at large. Sarah Ullman educates supporters on more appropriate responses that empower survivors and help them heal. Drawing on interviews with survivors and support providers, she offers powerful, provocative insights to therapists, other frontline workers assisting survivors, researchers, and students. She reviews transtheoretical research on why, how often, and to whom women disclose the impact of social contexts on disclosures and social reactions from informal support networks and professionals in a variety of institutional settings. New to this edition is updated research addressing social media, social phenomena like the MeToo movement, and informal supporters amp rsquo experiences with survivors. While most research still focuses on White, heterosexual, and cisgender women, emerging findings on LGBTQ+ individuals, cis males, people of color, and people with disabilities are reviewed where available.

Feminist Perspectives on Women, Money, and Psychology lays the groundwork for an integrative and well-rounded understanding of how history and oppression have shaped women's financial experiences, and offers a path forward for scholars, clinicians, and others seeking more informed, equitable approaches to money. The book presents an expansive view of various aspects of the intersection of women, money, and psychology, aiming to be useful both personally and professionally. In doing so, it addresses a critical gap in scholarship, exploring how historical and systemic forces have influenced women's relationships with money. Each chapter focuses on a different theme, including historical background, relationships, work, motherhood, identity, clinical practice, and action and advocacy. Drawing from feminist psychology, developmental psychology, and sociology, it provides an intersectional analysis that highlights the unique experiences of women of color and LGBTQIA women. A lifespan perspective offers insight into how financial attitudes and challenges evolve from childhood through older adulthood. Many chapters thoughtfully incorporate research and information from fields including history, economics, sociology, social psychology, gender studies, law and public policy, and cultural anthropology. Throughout the book, vignettes woven into the text highlight the power of storytelling, making this academic volume accessible to wide audiences seeking meaningful change.
