The Under-Representation of Black and Minority Ethnic Educators in Education evidences that discrimination at an individual, institutional and structural level is still experienced in the leadership of children’s learning. The analysis evaluates the extent to which under-representation is a result of chance, coincidence or design. Based on original research using a mixed-methods approach, and drawing on Critical Race Theory this book examines the under-representation of Black and minority ethnic (BAME) educators in education. It identifies over 40 separate codes emerging from interviews with BAME leaders in children’s learning. These codes include surveillance, isolation, awareness of their position, the need to be better, professional development, the complexity of racism and the difficulties of talking about racism. The book contributes to educational leadership in questioning the extent to which equitable outcomes can be delivered when the education service is itself a site and source of inequality and discrimination. It brings to front the suppressed narratives of under-representation of people of colour and offers insights based on comprehensive data collection.This book will be of great interest for academics, researchers, and post-graduate students in the fields of education management and leadership, Critical Race Theory, and the Sociology of Education.

Critical Pedagogy, Race, and Media investigates how popular media offers the potential to radicalise what and how we teach for inclusivity. This book argues that the transformative act of writing can be used to strengthen the racial competency of White educators in profound ways, leading them to a more comprehensive consciousness regarding the way their racial identity impacts them personally and professionally.Through detailing the experiences of two White educators who engaged in a practice of deeply reflective personal narrative writing about their racial identity, this book presents written data from the participants and discusses the theoretical and practical implications of the participants’ written work. It also provides a strong, evidence-informed case for using reflective writing as a tool for strengthening the racial competency of White educators in order to positively impact their students, their classrooms, and their greater school communities. Lastly, the book offers writing exercises that can be applied to contexts within and outside the field of education so that readers can start the important work of further developing their racial competency.It will appeal to researchers, teacher educators, faculty, and scholars with interest in whiteness studies and advancing antiracist pedagogies, as well as literacy education and diversity and equity in education.

The global movement of people and migration has led to increased mobility within the teaching profession. However, the prevailing expectations regarding the specific desired backgrounds, habitus, and pedagogical ideas of how a teacher should be, act, and understand their work have made the professional transition significantly challenging for immigrant teachers who do not fit into this frame.Drawing on international literature and valuable insights from Asian immigrant teachers in Australia, this book explores the personal, social, and contextual factors governing their professional transition experiences. It examines the diverse and intricate experiences of Asian immigrant teachers as they negotiate their identities, navigate adaptation, and cultivate a sense of belonging within the Australian education system.Set against the backdrop of an increasingly diverse student population and a critical shortage of teachers faced by many countries worldwide, this book offers a timely review of how we can harness the capabilities of the immigrant teacher workforce to meet diverse needs, improve school participation and well-being, and ensure equitable and inclusive education for all students. Based on a three- year research study, this book presents a rich and immersive ethnographic exploration of the experiences of Chicana/ o– Latina/ o students and the Chicana/ o– Latina/ o scholastic youth culture in American middle schools.The author provides insights into the diverse heritage of contemporary American school life, exploring the politics of social identity categories, and taking a new look at how the youth community practice an adult organized world. Employing an intra- ethnic differentiation theoretical framework, it seeks to understand how students create and negotiate a variety of racial, class, ethnic, academic, and “social clique” identities in order to navigate both official and hidden curriculum demands of school.
