Reclaiming Participatory Governance offers empirical and theoretical perspectives on how the relationship between social movements and state institutions is emerging and developing through new modes of participatory governance. One of the most interesting political developments of the past decade has been the adoption by social movements of strategies seeking to change political institutions through participatory governance. These strategies have flourished in a variety of contexts, from anti-austerity and pro-social justice protests in Spain, to movements demanding climate transition and race equality in the UK and the USA, to constitutional reforms in Belgium and Iceland. The chief ambition and challenge of these new forms of participatory governance is to institutionalise the prefigurative politics and social justice values that inspired them in the first place, by mobilising the bureaucracy to respond to their claims for reforms and rights. The authors of this volume assess how participatory governance is being transformed and explore the impact of such changes, providing timely critical reflections on: the constraints imposed by cultural, economic and political power relations on these new empowered participatory spaces; the potential of this new "wave" of participatory democracy to reimagine the relationship between citizens and traditional institutions towards more radical democratic renewal; where and how these new democratisation efforts sit within the representative state; and how tensions between the different demands of lay citizens, organised civil society and public officials are being managed. This book will be an important resource for students and academics in political science, public administration and social policy, as well as activists, practitioners and policymakers interested in supporting innovative engagement for deeper social transformation.Chapter 11 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

This book explains deliberative constitution-making with a special focus on the connections between participation, representation and legitimacy and provides a general overview of what the challenges and prospects of deliberative constitution-making are today. It seeks to provide a more complete picture of what is at stake as a political trend in various places in the world, both theoretically and empirically grounded. Distinctively, the book studies not only established democracies and well-known cases of deliberative constitution-making but also such practices in authoritarian and less consolidated democratic settings and departs from a traditional institutional perspective to have a special focus on actors, and in particular underrepresented groups. This book is of key interest to scholars and students of deliberative democracy, constitutional politics, democratization and autocratization studies, citizen participation and more broadly to comparative politics, public administration, social policy and law.

Direct Democracy Institutions in a Globalized World
The New Democratic Frontier

This book challenges the idea that representative democracy is the pinnacle of political development. The authors argue that when citizens can directly initiate and veto constitutional changes, democracy enters a new phase – direct democracy – as a distinct political system. Using original data and comparisons across six countries and 15 U.S. states, the book shows that direct democracies foster legitimacy, stability and engagement. Combining historical, institutional and empirical insights, the book reframes democracy’s future and offers a timely guide for expanding citizen power in the 21st century. This book is of key interest to scholars and students of democratic regimes, reform and democratization and, more broadly, comparative politics.
Public Deliberation in the Digital Age
Platforms, Participation, and Legitimacy

This book provides a comprehensive examination of how digital platforms shape deliberative processes and democratic engagement, combining theoretical insights with empirical evidence. It draws on typologies, conceptual models, case studies, comparative analyses, and ethical reflections to assess how digital tools can support—or undermine—the legitimacy of deliberative procedures and wider democratic participation. This book focuses on initiatives by public institutions to involve citizens in areas such as climate governance, youth engagement, public service media, party politics, and AI-mediated dialogue. Using the input-throughput-output legitimacy framework, it systematically explores how digital platforms influence who participates, how they engage, and how these processes connect to the broader public and contribute to policy outcomes. In doing so, this book equips readers to critically navigate the evolving landscape of participatory and deliberative practices amid rapid digital transformation. This book is essential reading for scholars, students, and practitioners interested in the use of digital technologies for participatory and deliberative purposes, and more broadly in political communication, democratic innovation, media studies, party politics, and the social sciences.Chapter 1, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC-BY-SA) 4.0 International license.
