The aim of this monograph is to describe the main concepts and recent - vances in multiscale ?nite element methods. This monograph is intended for thebroaderaudienceincludingengineers,appliedscientists,andforthosewho are interested in multiscale simulations. The book is intended for graduate students in applied mathematics and those interested in multiscale compu- tions. It combines a practical introduction, numerical results, and analysis of multiscale ?nite element methods. Due to the page limitation, the material has been condensed. Each chapter of the book starts with an introduction and description of the proposed methods and motivating examples. Some new techniques are introduced using formal arguments that are justi?ed later in the last chapter. Numerical examples demonstrating the signi?cance of the proposed methods are presented in each chapter following the description of the methods. In the last chapter, we analyze a few representative cases with the objective of demonstrating the main error sources and the convergence of the proposed methods. A brief outline of the book is as follows. The ?rst chapter gives a general introductiontomultiscalemethodsandanoutlineofeachchapter.Thesecond chapter discusses the main idea of the multiscale ?nite element method and its extensions. This chapter also gives an overview of multiscale ?nite element methods and other related methods. The third chapter discusses the ext- sion of multiscale ?nite element methods to nonlinear problems. The fourth chapter focuses on multiscale methods that use limited global information.

The book of nature, according to Galilei, is written in the language of mat- matics. The nature of mathematics is being exact, and its exactness is und- lined by the formalism used by mathematicians to write it. This formalism, characterized by theorems and proofs, and syncopated with occasional l- mas, remarks and corollaries, is so deeply ingrained that mathematicians feel uncomfortable when the pattern is broken, to the point of giving the - pression that the attitude of mathematicians towards the way mathematics should be written is almost moralistic. There is a de?nition often quoted, “A mathematician is a person who proves theorems”, and a similar, more alchemistic one, credited to Paul Erd? os, but more likely going back to Alfr´ ed R´ enyi,statingthat“Amathematicianisamachinethattransformsco?eeinto 1 theorems ”. Therefore it seems to be the form, not the content, that char- terizes mathematics, similarly to what happens in any formal moralistic code wherein form takes precedence over content. This book is deliberately written in a very di?erent manner, without a single theorem or proof. Since morality has its subjective component, to pa- phrase Manuel Vasquez Montalban, we could call it Ten Immoral Mathemat- 2 ical Recipes . Does the lack of theorems and proofs mean that the book is more inaccurate than traditional books of mathematics? Or is it possibly just a sign of lack of co?ee? This is our ?rst open question. Exactness is an interesting concept.

Applied Delay Differential Equations is a friendly introduction to the fast-growing field of time-delay differential equations. Written to a multi-disciplinary audience, it sets each area of science in his historical context and then guides the reader towards questions of current interest.

This book aims to give a user friendly tutorial of an interdisciplinary research topic (fronts or interfaces in random media) to senior undergraduates and beginning grad uate students with basic knowledge of partial differential equations (PDE) and prob ability. The approach taken is semiformal, using elementary methods to introduce ideas and motivate results as much as possible, then outlining how to pursue rigor ous theorems, with details to be found in the references section. Since the topic concerns both differential equations and probability, and proba bility is traditionally a quite technical subject with a heavy measure theoretic com ponent, the book strives to develop a simplistic approach so that students can grasp the essentials of fronts and random media and their applications in a self contained tutorial. The book introduces three fundamental PDEs (the Burgers equation, Hamilton– Jacobi equations, and reaction–diffusion equations), analysis of their formulas and front solutions, and related stochastic processes. It builds up tools gradually, so that students are brought to the frontiers of research at a steady pace. A moderate number of exercises are provided to consolidate the concepts and ideas. The main methods are representation formulas of solutions, Laplace meth ods, homogenization, ergodic theory, central limit theorems, large deviation princi ples, variational principles, maximum principles, and Harnack inequalities, among others. These methods are normally covered in separate books on either differential equations or probability. It is my hope that this tutorial will help to illustrate how to combine these tools in solving concrete problems.

The book lies at the interface of mathematics, social media analysis, and data science. Its authors aim to introduce a new dynamic modeling approach to the use of partial differential equations for describing information diffusion over online social networks. The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix for the underlying social network are used to find communities (clusters) of online users. Once these clusters are embedded in a Euclidean space, the mathematical models, which are reaction-diffusion equations, are developed based on intuitive social distances between clusters within the Euclidean space. The models are validated with data from major social media such as Twitter. In addition, mathematical analysis of these models is applied, revealing insights into information flow on social media. Two applications with geocoded Twitter data are included in the book: one describing the social movement in Twitter during the Egyptian revolution in 2011 and another predicting influenza prevalence. The new approach advocates a paradigm shift for modeling information diffusion in online social networks and lays the theoretical groundwork for many spatio-temporal modeling problems in the big-data era.

This monograph demonstrates a new approach to the classical mode decomposition problem through nonlinear regression models, which achieve near-machine precision in the recovery of the modes. The presentation includes a review of generalized additive models, additive kernels/Gaussian processes,  generalized Tikhonov regularization, empirical mode decomposition, and Synchrosqueezing, which are all related to and generalizable under the proposed framework.Although kernel methods have strong theoretical foundations, they require the prior selection of a good kernel. While the usual approach to this kernel selection problem is hyperparameter tuning, the objective of this monograph is to present an alternative (programming) approach to the kernel selection problem while using mode decomposition as a prototypical pattern recognition problem. In this approach, kernels are programmed for the task at hand through the programming of interpretable regression networks in the contextof additive Gaussian processes.It is suitable for engineers, computer scientists, mathematicians, and students in these fields working on kernel methods, pattern recognition, and mode decomposition problems.

Our goal is to popularize thermodynamics for model designers. The example series of models includes very classic solid and fluid models, such as Newtonian, viscoplastic and viscoelastic materials, but also new heat effects and original combinations of existing models. The aim of the new proposed framework is to allow a clear and easy development of constitutive equations that automatically satisfy the second principle. Instead of writing directly constitutive relations, model designers are encouraged to first specify the energy. Boundary Element Method for Magnetohydrodynamic Flow” offers one of the first systematic and detailed treatments of the application of boundary element method (BEM) to magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow problems. It aims to fill in the gaps left by the earlier books on the application of BEM to some physical problems such as fluid dynamics, elasticity, and geophysics. Geometry in ancient Greece is said to have originated in the curiosity of mathematicians about the shapes of crystals, with that curiosity culminating in the classification of regular convex polyhedra addressed in the final volume of Euclid’s Elements. Since then, geometry has taken its own path and the study of crystals has not been a central theme in mathematics, with the exception  of Kepler’s work on snowflakes. Only in the nineteenth century did mathematics begin to play a role in crystallography as group theory came to be applied to the morphology of crystals. This monograph follows the Greek tradition in seeking beautiful shapes such as regular convex polyhedra. The primary aim is to convey to the reader how algebraic topology is effectively used to explore the rich world of crystal structures. Graph theory, homology theory, and the theory of covering maps are employed to introduce the notion of the topological crystal which retains, in the abstract, all the information on the connectivity of atoms in the crystal. For that reason the title Topological Crystallography has been chosen.Topological crystals can be described as “living in the logical world, not in space,” leading to the question of how to place or realize them “canonically” in space. Proposed here is the notion of standard realizations of topological crystals in space, including as typical examples the crystal structures of diamond and lonsdaleite. A mathematical view of the standard realizations is also provided by relating them to asymptotic behaviors of random walks and harmonic maps. Furthermore, it can be seen that a discrete analogue of algebraic geometry is linked to the standard realizations.Applications of the discussions in this volume include not only a systematic enumeration of crystal structures, an area of considerable scientific interest for many years, but also the architectural design of lightweight rigid structures.
