Perth Then and Now accurately matches historic photographs of the city with specially commissioned contemporary views that show how each site looks today. With an Aboriginal history going back over 40,000 years, Perth ranks amongst the oldest places on earth with near continuous human habitation. The modern city came into being in 1829 with the formation of the Swan River Colony. For the first 60 years of its existence, Perth was no more than a small country town which lived on an economic knife-edge between riches and ruin. Then, in the 1890s, commercial quantities of gold were discovered in the North and East of Western Australia. This sparked the first of several mineral booms in the State and resulted in Perth being able to demonstrate its newfound wealth in the form grandiose buildings which transformed the modest town into a fine city.Since the late nineteenth century, a cycle of ‘boom and bust’ has added successive layers of development to the city’s rich tapestry of building styles. As with many cities around the world, Perth witnessed the destruction of many older buildings during the last quarter of the 20th century, but has now learned to respect its heritage, resulting in some spectacular and imaginative adaptive reuses of older buildings.Past and present are laid side by side in this fascinating visual tour around the capital of Western Australia.

Besides being the only British territory occupied by the Germans in the Second World War, it is perhaps less generally known that the Channel Islands were fortified out of all proportion to the rest of Hitler's Atlantic Wall: a legacy that is explored in individual chapters on Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey and Sark. First-hand accounts of all seven Commando raids are brought together for the first time. A summary of how the Islands' hotels were put to use by their German guests may intrigue present-day visitors, and a review of the war museums gives an insight into the variety of relics that enthusiasts have had the foresight to preserve. The war cemeteries are described, and there is a list of every grave of both sides of the two World Wars. Annotated aerial photographs form an important aspect of the book among them unique pictures of Sark for which exceptional permission was granted to enter the island's inviolable airspace.

Published to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Normandy campaign, Panzers in Normandy Then and Now is a detailed study of the German panzer regiments in Normandy in 1944 as seen from the German side. The book is basically divided into two parts: the theoretical composition of the 1944 model of the panzer regiment, its equipment and personnel, and secondly, individual chapters on the seventeen panzer units which saw service in Normandy. In addition, the book contrasts the scenes of the fighting that raged in the countryside and villages of this part of France with comparison photographs of the battleground as it is today. Research for this book also resulted in the discovery of the location of the grave of the most famous panzer commander, formerly listed as missing in action, when a Normandy roadside revealed its secret in 1983 as the last resting place of the victor of Villers-Bocage, Michael Wittmann.

Home to two of the three major banks in the United States, it has gained major prominence as a financial center. It began as one of several small courthouse villages in the Carolina Piedmont but grew after the discovery of gold nearby. In the years following the Civil War Charlotte became a symbol of the New South transitioning from agriculture to industrialism at the heart of the pidemont's textile industry. By the turn of the century, skyscrapers, department stores and congested streets testified to the expansion of the little crossroads village of the early 1800s.This easily accessible history of Charlotte is told using vintage photos, some taken just after the Civil War, right up until the 1960s. A late arrival on the Southern landscape, the city of Birmingham was not incorporated until after the Civil War. In fact, from 1820 to 1871, what is now Birmingham was known as the hamlet of Elyton, a small crossroads set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains where several Pony Express and stage routes crossed paths. When two railroads eventually intersected at this point—where, significantly, all the ingredients necessary to make iron existed in close proximity—the region’s growth exploded. Birmingham’s history is not a story of the grace and vanished grandeur of an antebellum past, but rather, a dynamic story of modern American industrialization.Sites covered include: Hollywood, Alabama State Fairgrounds, Vulcan Park, Mountain Brook Village, The Old Mill, Avondale Park, Highland Park, Woodlawn High, Quinlan Castle, Five Points South, Bottega Favorita, Old Jefferson County Courthouse, Capitol Park, Tutwiler Hotel, Twentieth Street, Louise Wooster Brothel, Alabama Theatre, Kress Department Store, Joy Young Restaurant, Terminal Station, Molton Hotel, Lovemans, Massey Building, Bright Star, Temple of Sibyl, Sloss Furnaces, Red Mountain and Legion Field.

In 1836 revolutionaries routed the Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto and the nearby town took the name of the battle's victor, General Sam Houston. Since then Houston has become America's fourth largest city, and its magnificent cityscape of concrete, glass, and steel bears little resemblance to traditional Texas imagery. It was an entrepreneurial New York family who first promoted Houston's lush landscape and vast potential in the Northeast and Europe, and the town expanded from a handful of tents into a place of more than 10,000 residents by 1900. Oil was discovered nearby in 1901 and from then on Houston never looked back. Putting archive and contemporary photographs of the same landmark side-by-side, Indianapolis Then and Now® provides a visual chronicle of the city's past. The development of Indianapolis has taken more unexpected turns than a driver at its world-famous Speedway. Roaring to life after a rather inauspicious start, Indianapolis became known as the "Crossroads of America" during the early 1900s, with a bustling Union Station train terminal as well as a flourishing literary and artistic scene of nationally renowned poets, painters, and playwrights. Mansions were built along the showplace thoroughfare of North Meridian Street, pharmaceutical and automobile industries employed thousands, and jazz music was played into the night. Teenagers at Shortridge High School produced the nation's first high school daily newspaper, and many went on to become novelists and politicians, including Booth Tarkington and Richard Lugar. The Hoosier capital occasionally veered off track; from the 1950s to the 1970s it was referred to as "Naptown" and "India-NO-place." Indianapolis has picked up speed since the 1990s and is once again a vibrant city, warmly nicknamed "Indy," with a spectacularly rejuvenated downtown. Residents have taken extraordinary care to preserve the best of the past, and have supported the development of new sports stadiums and retail outlets. Indianapolis Then and Now® features historic places such as the Indiana Statehouse, the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Lockerbie Square, and the Federal Building, as well as modern areas of interest such as the Monon Trail and Circle Centre, all showing the mixture of preservation and change in this historic city.

St. Louis Then and Now is a captivating chronicle of history and change. It pairs photographs over a century old with specially commissioned views of the same scenes as they exist today to show the evolution of St. Louis from the pioneers’ “Gateway to the West” to a thriving and dynamic city of the 21st century.Established by French fur-trader Pierre Laclede in 1764 and named in honor of the patron saint of France, St. Louis was in its earliest days a trading outpost near the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Laclede showed remarkable foresight, pronouncing that “by its locality and central position,” St. Louis was to become “one of the finest of cities.” His vision was accurate: with the advantages of a natural sand levee and sheltering limestone bluffs, the central “city by the river” grew rapidly over the following decades. After Jefferson purchased the western territories, including St. Louis, from the French in 1804, the town became one of the busiest of American cities during the period of western expansion. St. Louis was the “Gateway to the West,” chief provisioner and jumping-off point for westward-bound explorers, adventurers, and gold prospectors. The following centuries have seen St. Louis grow inexorably into Laclede’s “finest of cities.” Its location on the Mississippi, once jammed with the fabulous steamboats that brought Mark Twain to the city, and its heritage as a heartland of ragtime, jazz, and blues music have given St. Louis a distinctive flavor that today blends the quaint and historic with the modern.Sites include: SS Admiral, Eads Bridge, the Levee, the Gateway Arch, Old Courthouse, the Garment District, Union Station, City Hall, Soulard Market, Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Missouri Botanical Gardens, St. Louis University, the Theater District, Sportsman’s Park, the 1904 World’s Fair, St. Louis Art Museum, Cathedral of St. Louis

Montreal Then and Now takes 70 archive photos from across the city that sits on the banks of the St.Lawrence river and compares them with the same view today in this fascinating bilingual edition. Established in 1642 as a Roman Catholic mission, Montreal was named for the mountain where its French founders erected a cross. They also laid out the streets that today meander through three core districts: the Plateau, Downtown, and historic Old Montreal. The city has remade itself three times: first in the 1830s when planners decreed that all buildings be built with Trenton limestone; again in the 1870s when the city moved up the hill into what is called the Square Mile; and finally in the 1960s, when Place Ville Marie and the infrastructure for the Expo 67 World’s Fair dramatically altered the skyline. A number of historic properties were lost, including the St. James Club, Her Majesty’s Theatre, and the Van Horne Mansion. In spite of the architectural vandalism, Montreal, with its signature greystone buildings and quiet parks, remains one of Canada’s most alluring and invigorating cities.Sites include: Mount Royal, City Hall, Champ de Mars, Place Jacques Cartier, Sailors Chapel, Bonsecours Market, Place Royale, Place D”Armes, Notre Dame, Chinatown,Victoria Square, Fairmont Le Reine Elizabeth, Windsor Station, Sun Life Building, Windsor Hotel, Dorchester Square, Cathedral of Mary Queen of the World, St.Lawrence Boulevard, St. Jean, Habitat 67, Expo 67, Cartier Monument, Olympic Stadium.
