Our societies are ageing, and we need to identify sustainable and person-centred solutions for supporting frail older people in their homes.Reablement offers a radical new integrated care approach which supports older people to regain and maintain functioning and independence. This interdisciplinary book provides an introduction to the remarkable, if haphazard, international growth in reablement policies and practices in aged care over the past 20 years. Incorporating theoretical and empirical research, it considers benefits for clients and care workers, cost-saving potentials and reablement provision for people with dementia. Finally, the book reflects on key findings, challenges and the way forward for long-term care for older people. The introduction, 'The concept, rationale, and implications of reablement', is available Open Access via Bristol University Press Digital.

In this insightful collection, academic experts consider the impact of neoliberal policies and ideology on the status of care work in Nordic countries. With new research perspectives and empirical analyses, it assesses challenges for care work including technologies, management and policy-making. Arguing that there is a care crisis even in the supposedly feminist Nordic ‘nirvana’, this book explores understandings of the care crisis, the serious consequences for gender equality and the hitherto neglected effects on the long-term sustainability of the Nordic welfare states. This astute take on the Nordic welfare model provides insights into what the Nordic experience can tell us about wider international issues in care.

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. The COVID-19 pandemic has made unpaid care more visible through its absence, while also increasing the need for it. Drawing on a range of research projects covering Canada, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the UK and the US, this book documents a broad spectrum of unpaid work performed by residents, relatives, volunteers and staff in nursing homes. It demonstrates how boundaries between paid and unpaid work are flexible, varying considerably with conditions, time, place and intersectional populations. By examining the complex labour process within nursing homes, this book provides insight and understanding which will be critical in planning for nursing home care post-pandemic.

Based on a comparative study covering 15 Western European countries, this edited volume examines the responses of long-term care homes for older people to the COVID-19 pandemic. It analyses the preparedness of governments and residences and the structural weaknesses revealed and exacerbated by the crisis, such as staff shortages, the precariousness of employment in the sector, and the deficient coordination between the health and caring sectors. By examining the governance structures of the care home sector and their performance before and during the crisis, the book highlights the institutional, organisational, and management challenges facing care homes, both in continuing to provide services to an increasingly ageing population and in the event of future public health crises.

Care is fundamental to our individual and collective wellbeing, but it is also deeply implicated in historical and present-day injustices. Taking seriously the darker potentialities of care as a relation of exploitation and domination, this edited collection interrogates the social and governance infrastructures that variously shape, expropriate, necessitate and unravel care at the ‘private’ interpersonal level. Combining rich empirical analysis and theoretical rigour, the chapters reveal: • entrenched inequalities in informal care responsibilities and the resources needed to undertake them;• the intimate relationship between care, exploitation and expropriation, including their frequent embeddedness in colonial power structures; and • the urgency of reforming, resourcing and valuing informal care at the infrastructural level.Invaluable reading for scholars and students of health and social care and social policy, this book offers a critical framework for reimagining care in the service of more just and equitable societies.
