Nanomaterials have unique properties that can make them highly reactive. This reactivity can cause unwanted interactions with living cells, an increase in oxidative stress or damage to genetic material�- resulting in damage to the environment and local wildlife. This negative impact is often further increased after surface functionalization of nanomaterials with other materials which offer unique properties of their own. To ensure environmental safety and ecological balance, rigorous toxicity testing of functionalized nanomaterials (FNMs) is necessary.

This book discusses the toxicological uncertainties of FNMs and the limitations of FNMs in a range of applications. Later chapters propose methods to reliably assess the harm that functionalized nanomaterials can cause to the environment and wildlife, as well covering recent developments in the field of environmental health safety. The book concludes with a discussion on the future prospects of safe functionalized nanomaterials.

Vineet Kumar is presently working as a National Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Microbiology, School of Life Sciences at Central University of Rajasthan, Rajasthan, India. He earned his Ph.D. (2018) in Environmental Microbiology from Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar (A Central) University, Lucknow, India. His research interests include waste management, bioremediation, phytoremediation, metagenomics, wastewater treatment, environmental monitoring, bioplastic, and biofuel production. He has published more than 45 articles in peer-reviewed international journals of repute, 54 book chapters, and 4 scientific magazine articles, with more than citations of 2100, and h-index of 26. In addition, he has published 2 authored and 22 edited books on various aspects of science and engineering by Elsevier, Springer, CRC Press, RSC, and Wiley. He has been serving as a guest editor and reviewer in more than 50 International Journals for his research area. He is an active member of numerous scientific societies including the Microbiology Society (UK), the Indian Science Congress Association (India), the Association of Microbiologists of India (India), etc. Prof. Chaudhery Mustansar Hussain, PhD, is an adjunct professor and director of laboratories in the Department of Chemistry & Environmental Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, New Jersey, United States. His research focuses on sustainability, the applications of nanotechnology and advanced materials, environmental management, analytical chemistry and other various industries. Dr. Hussain is the author of numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals as well as a prolific author and editor of around 200 books, including scientific monographs and handbooks in his research areas. He has published with ELSEVIER, American Chemical Society, Royal Society of Chemistry, John Wiley & Sons, CRC Press, and Springer.
