Beskrivning
Iraq is home to one of humanity's oldest civilizations, yet it remains one of the most persistently misunderstood societies in the modern world. Its social fabric — woven from millennia of conflict, loyalty, and survival — has long resisted simple explanation. This book bridges historical insights with the modern science of Tight-Loose (TL) theory to pick up where the renowned 14th-century sociologist and philosopher Ibn Khaldun left off in his classic, Muqaddimah and provide a compelling framework for understanding the complexities of Iraqi society. Tight-Loose theory explains cultural variation in the strength of social norms: tight cultures enforce strict behavioral expectations, while loose cultures permit greater individual latitude — with tightness emerging as an adaptive response to existential threats like warfare, disease, and scarcity.Using a massive, first-of-its-kind project that analyzes a nationally representative survey from 6,823 respondents across all eighteen governorates, the authors show how this cultural tightness manifests in both social and political phenomena including dual personality, tribalism, sectarianism, declining interpersonal trust, authoritarianism, and conspiracy thinking. They conclude by proposing a "Cultural Goldilocks" framework for recalibrating Iraqi culture toward greater balance, offering evidence-based recommendations for institutional and normative reforms that could reduce hyper-tightness while preserving cultural coherence and social stability.
