TONY BALLANTYNE is Lecturer in History at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Previously he has taught at the Universities of Cambridge and Illinois-UC. He has published numerous articles on British colonialism in South Asia and the Pacific, focusing on the place of religion and literacy in the colonial encounter.
