The field study was prompted by the conditions in Bamenda, when despite considerable natural resources, there was underpopulation, a very high infant mortality, and the status of women was very low. Phyllis M. Kaberry (1910–1977) was educated at the University of Sydney and was reader in Social Anthropology at University College London for twenty-six years. She is the author of Aboriginal Woman, also available from Routledge.
