Genesis 1-11 Through the Centuries

From the Second Temple period to the modern age, Genesis 1-11 has inspired countless interpretations across Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions. This volume explores how readers have grappled with some of the Bible's most enduring questions, including creation ex nihilo, the nature of humanity, and the origins of evil, while tracing the rich afterlives of these narratives in theology, preaching, art, music, and literature.Placing interpretation within its historical and cultural setting, the book offers a sweeping account of the ways communities have understood, contested, and reshaped the Primeval History over two thousand years. Balancing major interpretive currents with lesser-known voices, it provides a comprehensive guide to the reception of Genesis 1-11 and demonstrates why these ancient stories continue to resonate today.
