      Beskrivning

This thoroughly revised edition of what has become the standard work in its field continues the original focus on the "nuts and bolts" of international human rights law and practice. Hurst Hannum and the contributors to this volume describe in detail regimes and procedures which have been developed during the past decade and evaluate the effectiveness of procedures which were only in their infancy in the early 1980s.The fifteen contributors, all specialists in their fields, offer a panoramic yet meticulously detailed survey of the many and varied techniques now available for the protection of human rights at global, regional, and national levels. A fully revised and updated set of appendixes, including a bibliographic essay which itself serves as a miniguide to the flourishing human rights literature, contains additional information useful to human rights lawyers, nongovernmental personnel, academics, and others interested in making the promotion and protection of human rights a reality. As democratization and other changes sweep through the world, the Guide seeks to ensure that human rights will have an important and influential place in whatever "new world order" the diplomats may devise.

      Recensioner i media

"This is destined to become the Bible of the human rights activist. . . . A first-rate how-to-do-it examination of procedures for the promotion and protection of human rights. . . . The Guide is the most important and useful human rights book published in many years."-International Journal of Legal Information"Civil liberties and civil rights lawyers who do not obtain this fine book will often jeopardize the interest of their clients, private or governmental."-Federal Bar News and Journal"An excellent one-volume road map to the available procedures and techniques for enforcing international human rights law."-International Lawyer"The Guide is a significant and valuable contribution to the literature on international human rights. . . . The most rewarding aspect of the Guide is its spirit and determination to succeed."-International Law and Politics"As a practitioner's tool, the Guide is excellent. . . . Besides offering a general overview of major human rights laws and organizations, it outlines strategies and policies for selecting specific cases or issues to pursue. The authors take into account political as well as legal considerations and recognize the need to make the most efficient use of limited resources."-New York University journal of International Law and Politics"The concept of the book, the topics chosen, and the organization of subject matter are logical and appropriate to its stated aim of providing a 'nuts and bolts' guide through the labyrinth of national and international human rights law and practice"-Canadian Yearbook of International Law
