Exploring the ethical implications of future-oriented activities, this book establishes a framework for responsible anticipation in practice.There is increasing use of ‘foresight’ methods such as scenarios in the public and private sectors. Currently, these methods lack any recognised approaches to the elaboration of ethics or responsibility for consequences, for instance greater technological innovation can cause greater uncertainty rather than reduce it. This book addresses a growing interest in ways to think about the future, stimulated by an increasing sense of uncertainty, complexity, and threats to humanity, as well as visionary imagined possibilities. The chapters draw on research and reflective practice and address future-oriented action from an ethical perspective by considering the ways in which responsibility is, or is not, evident in a variety of cases and contexts. An action framework of proto-principles addressing relationality, temporality and perspectivity, combined with an anticipatory ethical stance are synthesised. The book offers ethically driven inspiration to those concerned with the professional and academic aspects of futures thinking, foresight and anticipation such that responsibility becomes more explicit in their methods and practices. It also offers a wider framework to groups working to foster more just and favourable conditions for future people, such as activist movements, policy makers and private enterprises. This framework will enable them to articulate how their actions relate responsibly to the future, reveal whose futures they anticipate in their narratives and their actions, and finally explicate their underlying assumptions and limitations toward taking actions which are collectively beneficial for wider humanity and all of Earth’s life.The book will be of use to academics, policy makers, and interested in futures studies, anticipation studies, technology studies, social sciences and humanities.

Ted Fuller is Professor emeritus and holder of the UNESCO Chair on Responsible Foresight for Sustainable Development, University of Lincoln, UK. His academic work addresses humanity’s relationships with its futures. He has held senior positions at UK Universities and was Editor in Chief of Futures Journal for ten years. The Lincoln UNESCO Chair was established in 2019 and works with partners from Higher Education Institutions and NGOs in the Global South on foresight and sustainable development. Responsible Futures is a foundational research project for the Chair.Fabrice Roubelat is Professor of Strategic Management and holds the UNESCO Chair on Foresight and Strategic International Intelligence, established in 2020 with international partners of the University of Poitiers School of Management and researchers of Cerege Lab. His research and PhD supervision topics include scenario planning and responsible anticipatory practices. He is an associate editor of Futures. He is a founding member of both the French UNESCO Chairs' Excellence Pole on Futures Literacy and Foresight and the French-speaking special interest group on anticipation practices within the AIMS strategic management society.Anne Marchais-Roubelat is an Associate Professor and head of the Master’s degree in Organizations and Transitions towards Sustainable Development at le Cnam-Paris. Over the last decade, she has established a research and teaching team that has organised pioneering work on climate change adaptation, fair trade, and action-based anticipation. She is member of LIRSA lab. Her research and doctoral supervision focus on responsible anticipation within the contexts of strategic action and organisational transformations. She is the head of AIMS strategic management society special interest group on anticipation practices.April K Ward connects peace and conflict studies with futures studies. Her doctoral research focused on anticipation and imagined futures in complex conflict and peace processes. She is an active member of the UNESCO Chair in Responsible Foresight for Sustainable Development at the University of Lincoln. She has a professional background in strategic foresight and futures literacy.Narcis Heraclide is an associate researcher at the UNESCO Chair on Foresight and Strategic International Intelligence at the University of Poitiers, France, and the Head of Research at the social enterprise Linklusion. His work revolves around the exploration of alternative futures in the face of grand challenges, the transformational practices of organizations towards alternative futures and the development of social innovation.
