Beskrivning
This book explores the analytical possibilities of the concept of a Global Campus as a framework for studying university campuses in their material dimensions, as well as their forms of sociability, protest, everyday life, cultural practices, and lived experiences. The concept of a Global Campus brings together these diverse dimensions, processes, and experiences by considering universities as spaces where academic and student communities do more than teach, conduct research, and study. University life is fundamentally collective: scholars, students, and other members of the university community interact, generate forms of sociability, produce and exchange knowledge, experience emotions, and participate in shared cultural and social practices. Despite the differences shaped by the material and economic conditions of academic life, members of university communities often develop an understanding of experiences that transcend geographical and institutional boundaries. The Global Campus therefore encompasses these multiple forms of action, production, interaction, and understanding, allowing us to examine how university communities experienced and contributed to the history of the twentieth century. The volume will be of interest to researchers in urban studies, history, heritage, cultural and social studies, diplomacy, anthropology, sociology, and global studies. Bringing together case studies from Spain, Portugal, the United States, Argentina, Mexico, Austria, France and Eastern Europe, it examines diverse historical contexts through an international and comparative perspective. Its interdisciplinary approach combines historical, architectural, anthropological, sociological, and cultural perspectives, making the book relevant to undergraduate and graduate teaching, as well as to practitioners and policymakers involved in university reform, heritage, and planning.
