'Meek Spencer’s influence might have mostly been a part of the “London School” – the ‘personal growth’ model of English presented in her 1977 book The Cool Web. However, as Colin Mills demonstrates, her impact spread far and wide. Significantly, she influenced thinking in Australia at a time when this country was addressing its curriculum ties to England and beginning to consider an Australian set of pedagogy/ies and policies. Ideas focused on encouraging teachers to consider reader behaviour rather than reading lessons – and the role of narrative in reading - made a huge mark on our work at the time. For example, her seminal work on How Texts Teach What Readers Learn is elegant in its simplicity and profound in pedagogical intent. Here, Mills guides us with skill and sensitivity through Meek Spencer’s key ideas. Today, as we navigate the policies on teaching reading across the English- speaking world, Meek Spencer’s voice echoes down the years! I highly recommend this book, both for Mills’ insightful guidance and for Meek Spencer’s joyous reminders of the child learner being at the centre.'Robyn Cox, Professor of Education, University of Tasmania, Australia'This book will resonate deeply with teachers and educators. Meek Spencer’s thinking has profoundly shaped my own practice. Many others have gained through reading her work a richer, more meaningful approach to literacy. This book powerfully reaffirms the centrality of literature. Mills’ dialogic mode of writing reminds us that literacy is a subtle human act – never merely a technical process.'Mat Tobin, Senior Lecturer, Oxford Brookes University, UKThis is an invaluable – and long overdue – analysis of the life and work of one of the great educators of the C20. Its key strength is in its emphasis of how indispensable Meek Spencer’s ideas remain for both academics and teachers in the current educational climate. Its target audience should include the politicians who make often uninformed decisions about the development of literacy across generations.John Hickman, Former Chair of Trustees, English and Media Centre, London UK'Mills provides us with a guiding light through Meek Spencer’s six decades of thinking, teaching and writing; a key thinker indeed!'Margaret M. Clark OBE, Emeritus Professor, University of Birmingham, UK
