Beskrivning
This book explores how Netflix and Tencent Video (WeTV) engage in localised streaming content production in Australia and Thailand, respectively, while also examining their broader cultural expansion strategies and international regulation. It provides readers with an overview of how streaming platforms influence global content production and dissemination.Through a comparative analysis of these two leading services, the book highlights their “glocal” strategies, combining both Western and non-Western perspectives and case studies. Specifically, Netflix has employed an internationalist strategy, claiming to “sell the world to the world” by investing in original productions from non-American markets and presenting them to a global audience. On the other hand, WeTV, the international version of a Chinese media brand, adapted to suit its intellectual property (IP)-centred economy and media synergy within the “pan-entertainment” ecosystem. The findings complement, challenge, and contribute to ongoing debates around cultural imperialism and potential future templates of “global media” in the streaming media era.The primary audience for this book includes academic libraries, scholars, streaming industry stakeholders, and policymakers. It will appeal to readers across several fields, including those interested in digital media and cultural studies, platform studies, television studies, transnational media industries and markets, and critical political economy.

“With (G)local Streaming Media Production: Netflix, Tencent Video, and transnational cultural industries, Wenjia Tang has advanced both newer and older fields—Streaming Media Studies, Platformisation, and Globalisation— around an assured analytical foundation in Critical Political Economy. The book gives us a textured picture of the exciting innovations and complex limits of (g)localisation in actual practice by comparing the leading Western, and leading Chinese, models of streaming video—Netflix and Tencent Video/WeTV —as they play out in Australia and Thailand respectively. Tang is compelling in how she manages to bring to light the fraught and contested balances amongst global business strategy, regional cultural and difference, and local regulation and viewer response.”-- Distinguished Emeritus Professor Stuart Cunningham, co-author of Social Media Entertainment: The New Intersection of Hollywood and Silicon Valley and Wanghong as Social Media Entertainment in China and co-editor of Creator Culture: An Introduction to Global Social Media Entertainment.“Wenjia Tang dives deep into Netflix’s and Tencent Video’s global streams and provides a wonderfully illuminating, comparative account that considers how the local and global interact, what is and isn’t changing in video production and distribution, and the place of the media organization in the streaming era. An important contribution that should be read.”-- Jonathan Gray, author of Television Studies (with Amanda D. Lotz), and editor of Planet Digital: A Global Media Cultures Reader (with Aswin Punathambekar and Adrienne Shaw).“For over a decade, streaming platforms have disrupted legacy media industries and transformed how content is produced, distributed, and consumed, yet cultural specificity stubbornly persists even as stories travel the globe with unprecedented ease. Comparing Netflix in Australia with Tencent Video/WeTV in Thailand, (G)local Streaming Media Production reveals how two streaming giants negotiate global distribution with local storytelling, cultural difference, regulation, and shifting configurations of media power. Moving beyond familiar accounts of American media dominance, Wenjia Tang offers a timely portrait of an increasingly multipolar streaming world in which global ambitions continually collide with, adapt to, and ultimately depend upon the local.”-- David Craig, Associate Professor, Communication, USC Annenberg
