Beskrivning
The book examines how states and regional organizations use criminal justice beyond their borders to govern and gain international standing in a changing global order. Introducing the concept of extraterritorial crime control, the book examines how criminal justice travels across borders as both a means of governing at a distance and a way for states to present themselves as responsible, influential or humane international actors. It brings criminology into conversation with international relations to ask who controls justice beyond national borders, on whose terms, and with what consequences. Drawing on original empirical research, chapters span Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, from EU crime-control policies and Nordic prison reform aid to Danish anti-piracy initiatives off Somalia, post-war legal reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina, hybrid courts in Africa, and China’s pursuit of Taiwanese citizens abroad. Topical cases include the use of Interpol notices for political repression, the recovery of assets linked to Russia, Libya and Syria, and the growing use of criminal justice measures in global security policy. The book reveals that initiatives presented as promoting human rights and the rule of law can also enable coercion, inequality and authoritarian control. It also foregrounds how affected states and communities negotiate, reshape and resist these interventions. It will be a useful resource to researchers, students and professionals working in criminal justice, foreign policy, development, security and human rights.
