Beskrivning
This book addresses two critical combinatorial optimization problems in fiber optic network design. It provides the first unified treatment of bandpass and band collocation problems, which emerge from wavelength division multiplexing technology in optical communications. Bandpass and Band Collocation Problems: Theory and Algorithms offers several key advantages that establish it as an indispensable reference in the field. Its originality as the first comprehensive treatment of these problems fills a significant academic gap, while its unified approach consolidates scattered literature under a single theoretical framework. The text provides exceptional academic depth through NP‑completeness proofs, complexity analyses, and detailed examination of exact, heuristic, and meta‑heuristic algorithms. Readers will benefit from clear connections between theoretical problems and real‑world telecommunications applications, a systematic classification of the existing literature, and access to online libraries of problem instances for comparative research. Additionally, this book identifies open research areas and proposes new directions, making it valuable for both learning and advancing the field. The primary audience for this book is graduate‑level academics and researchers, particularly those in telecommunications engineering and computer engineering disciplines. Secondary markets include algorithm developers and network planning specialists in the telecommunications sector, software engineers involved in optical network design, mathematical modeling teams in high‑technology R&D companies, and open‑source algorithm development communities seeking benchmark problems and solutions for comparative studies.

He served at Baku State University (1990–1997) and Ege University, Türkiye (1997–2024), and has been with the School of Engineering at Qarabağ University since 2024. During his years in Türkiye, 28 master’s and 25 doctoral theses were completed under his supervision, in fields ranging from operations research and cryptography to bioinformatics, Industry 4.0, and smart education systems. Together with his students and colleagues, he has published more than 100 articles and presented more than 100 conference papers. He has served on the scientific and organizing committees of 40 international and two national conferences, on the editorial boards of one inter-national and two national journals, and is editor‑in‑chief of the Journal of Modern Technology and Engineering. His main research area is combinatorial optimization, and he is a co‑author of three problems established in the world of mathematical literature: the Dominating Subset with Minimal Weight, the Bandpass Problem, and the Band Collocation Problem. Professor Hakan Kutucu is a faculty member in the Department of Software Engineering at Karabük University, Türkiye, where he serves as Director of the Institute of Graduate Programs. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics/Computer Science from Ege University in 2011, focusing on network design problems. He worked at the İzmir Institute of Technology from 1999 to 2012, conducted postdoctoral research at Paris Dauphine University, and held visiting positions in France and Kazakhstan. He has published more than 80 papers in refereed international journals and conferences on combinatorial optimization, machine learning, and mathematical modeling. He served as a co‑chair of the 9th International Symposium on Combinatorial Optimization (ISCO 2026, Kuşadası) and is a co‑editor of its proceedings published by Springer. He is also one of the authors of the Band Collocation Problem. Dr. Arif Gürsoy is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and currently serves in the Division of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science at Ege University, Türkiye, where he has worked since 2006. He received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from the Department of Mathematics at Ege University in 2005, 2009, and 2012, respectively, and was appointed associate professor in mathematics in 2023. His research interests include artificial intelligence, discrete mathematics, graph theory, mathematical programming, combinatorial optimization, scheduling, and soft computing. He has published numerous articles in international journals and presented many papers at national and international conferences; supervised twenty master’s theses and four doctoral dissertations in areas including computer science, optimization, cryptography, graph theory, data mining, and artificial intelligence; and has also served as a principal investigator and researcher on several projects funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBİTAK) and Ege University. He is one of the Turkish translation editors of Introduction to Algorithms and serves as the Managing Editor of two inter-national scientific journals: the International Journal of Maps in Mathematics and Calculation. Dr. Mehmet Kurt is a faculty member in the Department of Software Engineering at Istanbul Health and Technology University, Turkey. He graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Ege University and completed his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mathematics with a concentration in Computer Science at the same institution. His master’s thesis focused on vulnerability measurements in graphs, while his doctoral research examined the analysis and solution algorithms for the Bandpass Problem. Dr. Kurt has participated as a researcher in several research projects supported by TÜBİTAK. He actively advises students in various project competitions and contributes to the advancement of software engineering education. His research expertise includes artificial intelligence, graph theory, mathematical modeling, combinatorial optimization, and algorithm design.
