Beskrivning
The book examines the UK’s response to Russia’s war on Ukraine from the annexation of Crimea in 2014 to December 2025.It traces in detail how Britain has supported Ukraine – militarily, economically, diplomatically, and through sanctions and defence innovation – and how it has sought to lead the rebuilding of European security as the United States retrenches and the world order becomes multipolar. It argues that British policy is best understood as the status-seeking strategy of a major regional power, with a foreign policy strategy and security leadership role central to upholding the UK’s status in Europe. Making a distinctive contribution by linking interactionist role theory to the status-seeking literature, treating national roles as social structures enacted within a contested status hierarchy and status-seeking as the key motive for role enactment, the book provides a conceptually rigorous and empirically rich study of British foreign policy and of the war’s international relations. This book will be of key interest to anyone seeking to understand Britain’s place in European security after Brexit.

“Kwapińska and Whitman offer a compelling and original account of how states pursue status in international politics. Combining an innovative synthesis of role theory and status-seeking with rich empirical analysis, they demonstrate convincingly how the UK leveraged its support for Ukraine to reinforce its status and leadership credentials within the European security order. Moving beyond familiar debates about Brexit and Britain's global standing, this book provides fresh insights into UK foreign and security policy, the European security order, the war in Ukraine, and the dynamics of European state behaviour. An important and highly timely contribution, it will be essential reading for scholars of international relations, security studies, UK foreign policy, and European politics.”Alistair J.K. Shepherd, Aberystwyth University, UK “Amidst the turbulence of the UK’s domestic politics and foreign policy one thing has remained constant over the last decade: British resolve in supporting Ukraine. Both Conservative and Labour governments have been unwavering in their backing for Kyiv in the face of Russian aggression. Kamila Kwapińska and Richard G. Whitman explain why. In a theoretically sophisticated and empirically rich analysis, status-seeking emerges as the key to understanding the British position. The UK’s own anxieties drive its behaviour, but this has fortuitously noble outcomes: keeping Ukraine in the fight against an uncompromising enemy and upholding the values of a European and international order under assault. This book is a lucid account of how Ukraine has benefitted from British backing. Its historical and theoretical framing make it major contribution to scholarship on UK foreign policy.” Mark Webber, University of Birmingham, UK
