Jessica Benjamin, Ph.D., is a psychoanalyst and supervising faculty member at New York University Postdoctoral Psychology Program and the Stephen Mitchell Relational Studies Center in New York. She is author of the Routledge title Shadow of the Other.

   En av de mest intressanta böckerna på 2000-talet

   Jessica Benjamins fjärde bok: "Beyond Doer and Done To" är en av de mest intressanta psykoterapeutiska böckerna som utgivits på 2000-talet. Benjamin kallar sina idéer för en ömsesidig bekräftelse- och igenkänningsteori. Hennes ambition är att formulera en teori om den interpersonella utvecklingsprocess som hon betraktar som helt nödvändig för vår psykiska utveckling och för psykoterapeutiskt arbete. Enklast uttryckt handlar det Tredje om olika metaforer och sätt för att försöka förstå och komma ur vår starka psykiska benägenhet att hamna i komplementära antingen-eller-roller t.ex. offer-gärningsman, svag-stark, aktiv-passiv, inbjudare-avvisare, etc., som till stor del låser upp vår upplevelse och vårt agerande till fasta positioner som därmed förhindrar genuint möte och genuin kontakt. Det Tredje är ett begrepp som blivit vanligt inom psykoanalytisk teori, inom relationell, intersubjektiv och kleiniansk teori. Benjamin presenterade det Tredje för trettio år sedan i artikeln "Herre och slav" i boken The Bonds of Love 1988. Detta var före anknytnings-, mentaliserings-teorierna, modern spädbarns- och neurobiologisk forskning. Den relationella rörelsen, där Benjamin är en ledande teoretiker, var då bara i sin linda. Från att ha startat som ett begrepp för att dekonstruera maktrelationen mellan män och kvinnor har tillämpningen av det Tredje med åren vidgats till att bli ett analysinstrument för en mängd andra asymmetriska relationer mellan individer och grupper i terapeutiska sammanhang. Benjamin har rensat i terminologin och reducerat det Tredje till tre begrepp: The Rhythmic Third är hennes nya benämning på det hon tidigare kallat one-in-the-third, och avser det gemensamma, enhetliga - det som harmonierar i tredjeenheten. The Differentiating Third är den nya benämningen på the-third-in-the-one, och åsyftar det individuella (åtskiljande) i tredje-enheten. Slutligen använder hon begreppet The Moral Third. Det har egentligen inte så mycket med (överjags-)moral att göra utan handlar om ett önskat tillstånd, en förväntan eller förutsägbarhet i en relation. Detta är något som samskapas av båda parter och för att skapa en känsla av en lagbunden värld. Det Tredje används på olika sätt av olika tänkare och refererar till allt som kan användas för att skapa referenspunkter utanför dyaden, mellan terapeut (mor) och patient (barn). Benjamin hävdar att det både funnits missuppfattningar och felöversättningar av begreppet. Hon har ofta fått höra att termen är svårgripbar och och menar själv att begreppet fortfarande utvecklas. Benjamins teorier är inte så lättillgängliga. Hennes arbete stundtals varit förvirrande för hennes läsare, så det är nu mycket välkommet med ett klargörande av begreppet och en fördjupning av idéerna. Benjamin lever i högsta grad upp till den relationella psykoterapins integrerande ambition i sin integration med modern spädbarnsforskning, affektteori, neuropsykoanalys, m.m.
