Refugee Politics in Early Modern Europe

David de Boer is Assistant Professor of Political History at Radboud University Nijmegen. He is the author of The Early Modern Dutch Press in an Age of Religious Persecution: The Making of Humanitarianism (2023). He is co-editor of Rebellion and Diplomacy in Early Modern Europe (2023) and Revolts and Political Violence in Early Modern Imagery (2021).Geert H. Janssen is Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Amsterdam. He is the author of The Dutch Revolt and Catholic Exile in Reformation Europe (2014) and Princely Power in the Dutch Republic: Patronage and William Frederick of Nassau (1613-64) (2008). He also co-edited The Cambridge Companion to the Dutch Golden Age (2018) and The Ashgate Research Companion to the Counter-Reformation (2013).

This book provides a fantastic overview of the history of different refugee groups in the early modern period. The authors shed light on numerous aspects of the topic which have been long-overlooked and demonstrate the impact that refugees made on the political, religious, and social history of the early modern world,
