Beskrivning

The Jaguar S-type was a highly significant car for Jaguar in the 1960s, bridging a gap between the Mk 2 and the larger Mk X and the introduction of the XJ6. As this book shows, the Jaguar S-Type was regarded by some as a bit of an ugly duckling stylistically, with its snub nose and extended rear end, but was very much a swan regarding its advanced engineering and performance. This included groundbreaking independent rear suspension, which gave it excellent roadholding, powerful engines and brakes. The S-Type also featured a more luxurious interior than the Mk 2, including sumptuous leather seats and a veneer dashboard. Car and Driver magazine described the S-Type as a car for all seasons, ‘a convenient family car, a businessman’s express, a sports coupe and a grand tourer.’ The book also covers the performance of the S-Type in racing, its appearance in film and the introduction of the second S-Type (the 420) with its revised Mk X nose and a bigger engine.Although production of the Jaguar S-Type ended abruptly in 1968 with the introduction of the acclaimed XJ Series saloons, it proved to be a considerable leap forward in design and engineering.Illustrated with previously unseen photographs, this is a concise but complete guide to one of Jaguar’s lesser known but most significant cars.
