At the intersection of global and feminist film studies and decolonial perspectives, this book reframes cinema history through a decentred lens. Drawing on partial and situated knowledges, it challenges canonical narratives and interrogates how archival and textual regimes have shaped historiography from positions of privilege. Bringing together case studies from Latin America, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, it reveals asymmetrical transnational circuits, situated reception practices and the material infrastructures of film circulation.Through a bold feminist and decolonial framework, the collection examines how colonial and imperial power relations structure film cultures. It shifts attention from singular authorship toward non-commercial exhibition, itinerant practices and vernacular spectatorship — including set design, audience memory, fandom, and situated voices that shaped film fan magazines. The chapters map how political and cultural agents shape production, circulation and reception across global cinema networks.

Ainamar Clariana Rodagut is a Lecturer in the Department of Philology and Communication at the Universitat de Lleida. Her work examines cinema as a social and political field, addressing symbolic value production, cultural transfer, and structural inequalities. Diana Roig-Sanz is an ICREA Full Professor at UOC, Barcelona. Her research deals with global and sociological approaches to translation, literary and film history, and applies digital humanities, gender perspectives, and a decolonial approach to the circulation of small, minor, and less-translated cultures. Stefanie Van de Peer is Reader in Film & Media at Queen Margaret University. She has published Negotiating Dissidence (EUP 2017), Women in African Cinema (Routledge 2020) and ReFocus: The Films of Annemarie Jacir (EUP 2023). She has also edited several edited collections on diverse topics including Jocelyne Saab’s work, Arab Stardom and Global Feminist Film Archives. She sits on the Executive Committee of the British Association of Film, TV and Screen Studies, is series editor for EUP’s ReFocus: The International Directors series, and is associate editor for the journal Studies in World Cinema.
