ALEC RYRIE is Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Birmingham, UK. His publications on the early Reformations in England and Scotland include The Gospel and Henry VIII (2002) and The Origins of the Scottish Reformation (2006). He is currently researching early Protestant practices of prayer.
