Globalization poses new challenges for the modern welfare state and democracies. One controversial issue is how struggles for economic equality are linked with struggles for recognition of difference according to gender, ethnicity and sexuality. The Politics of Inclusion and Empowerment examines the political and academic debates about the inclusion or exclusion of women and marginalized social groups from different policy contexts. John Andersen is Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, Roskilde University Centre, Denmark. He previously worked as a expert for the European Commission from 1991 to 1994 in the third European Anti Poverty Programme (Poverty 3). His current fields of research are empowerment of underprivileged groups, urban policy and the inclusive labour market. Birte Siim is Associate Professor at the Institute for History, International and Social Studies, University of Aalborg, Denmark. She co-ordinated the national research programme Gender-Empowerment-Politics (GEP) from 1996 to 2002. She is author of Gender and Citizenship: Politics and Agency in France, Britain and Denmark 2000) and has co-edited Contested Concepts. Gender and Social Politics (2002). She is currently researching issues concerning gender, citizenship and multiculturalism.
