Beskrivning
New Edition of a Highly Regarded Reference As the first fully updated version in almost a decade, this comprehensive compendium brings together 2400 scientists who have made important contributions to the wide world of science. Rather than a Who’s-Who style laundry list, this user-friendly resource provides essential biographical information and focuses on scientific achievement. Indeed, it is as much a book about science as it is about the notable scientists who comprise the field. Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists, Third Edition concentrates on the 'traditional pure’ sciences of physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and the earth sciences. It also covers medicine and mathematics and includes a selection of people who have made important contributions to engineering, technology, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy. Including 29 illustrations of key scientific concepts and discoveries, this definitive collection also contains helpful resources such as a pronunciation guide, cross references, quotations, a subject index, timeline of key scientific events, and list of useful Websites.Contains More Biographies than Other Comparably Sized TitlesWritten by a recognized authority in the field, the uncomplicated prose eases readers into sophisticated concepts, like abstract mathematics and modern theoretical physics. The book highlights all Nobel Prize winners and popular scientists such as Keith Campbell, Ian Wilmut, and John Nash. Compiled in A-Z style, this work is the authoritative volume of its kind with more than 200 new entries in its latest edition.

The event chronology (500 BCE to present) is outstanding … —J. A. Buczynski, Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, CHOICE, May 2009, Vol. 46, No. 9 Praise for Previous Editions:… this is a very good reference book … If you have anything to do with running libraries … then it is one to buy. —Colin Tudge, New Scientist There are, of course, rivals on the shelves, but none of them seems to match the Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists in its breadth of learning and in so many specific ways, too. You have a splendid pair of tomes, which can be used not only as a biographical retrieval tool but also as a resource through which to trace the great schools of scientific exploration, the ebb and flow of revolution and ‘normal science’, and the personalia and geography of science today. The editors have made a major contribution to the scientific enterprise by creating an encyclopedia of this sort. Peer review is at the heart of science, and it is at the heart of this outstanding piece of work, too. —Bernard Dixon, Medical Science Research … this is a very major work … it is very warmly recommended and most definitely belongs in any scientific or major reference collection. —Stuart James, Science The two volumes are well produced, crammed full of useful facts, and should prove helpful in promoting a knowledge of the history of science.—Robert Hanbury Brown, Physics World
