In this region in the sixteenth and seventeenthcenturies, saints' cults and pilgrimage werefrequently contested, more so than in theMediterranean world. The central focus isthat of agency in religious change: whatdrove spiritual reform and what were itsconsequences for the 'ordinary' Catholic?This is explored through concepts of thereligious self, holy materiality, and sacredspace.
