Capital, culture and the country house in Britain and Ireland

This volume argues that the country house remains central to debates over questions of sovereignty and nationhood, to issues of culture and class, and to how the imperial past is remembered in Britain and Ireland. This centrality requires an assessment of the country house and estate that is attuned to regional and national specificity, committed to studying the landed estate over the longue durée, and alert to the questions of social, environmental and economic justice that dominate recent work in the field. This volume intervenes decisively in historical, literary and curatorial scholarship on the country house and to set out the framework, approaches and research questions that should underpin new histories of the country house.
