Studio Zung

Discover the sensitively considered and emotive spaces of interiors and architecture atelier Studio Zung, where Tommy Zung’s upbringing among modernist design icons informs every projectThe architectural and interior designer Tommy Zung’s design philosophy is rooted in a remarkable personal history. Raised among the twentieth century’s most radical artists, designers, and architects – including Buckminster Fuller, Isamu Noguchi, Ruth Asawa, and Josef Albers – he was immersed from an early age in a world where experimentation and imagination were fundamental to the creative process.Profoundly affected by the experience of his father, Thomas T.K. Zung, who immigrated from China in the 1950s and became partner to the visionary architect Bucky Fuller, Zung also found inspiration in his California surroundings, forming a deep love of the ocean and surfing.Today, Zung’s design sensibility is a balance between East and West, with an affinity for organic materials, tactile surfaces, and interiors that feel intrinsically connected to their surroundings. His serene, modernism-influenced residences are characterized by open expanses and interiors featuring ingenious combinations of materials, furnishings, and art.In this stunning book, Tommy invites readers into eight projects that embody Studio Zung’s aesthetic. Among them are the Manhattan apartment of Eleven Madison Park chef Daniel Humm and actress Annabelle Dexter Jones; fashion designer Ulla Johnson’s Montauk house; and Tommy’s own downtown-cool East Village residence. Nearly 200 photographs bring the spaces to life in exquisite detail.More than a showcase of beautiful rooms, Studio Zung offers insight into Zung’s design philosophy, revealing how architecture, interiors, and modernist influences come together to create homes of lasting beauty and emotional resonance – an inspiring book for everyone looking to create warm, timeless spaces with a calm, refined aesthetic.
