The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death offers readers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigatorFrances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother, founded the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936 and was later appointed captain in the New Hampshire police. In the 1940s and 1950s she built dollhouse crime scenes based on real cases in order to train detectives to assess visual evidence. Still used in forensic training today, the eighteen Nutshell dioramas, on a scale of 1:12, display an astounding level of detail: pencils write, window shades move, whistles blow, and clues to the crimes are revealed to those who study the scenes carefully.Corinne May Botz's lush color photographs lure viewers into every crevice of Frances Lee's models and breathe life into these deadly miniatures, which present the dark side of domestic life, unveiling tales of prostitution, alcoholism, and adultery. The accompanying line drawings, specially prepared for this volume, highlight the noteworthy forensic evidence in each case. Botz's introductory essay, which draws on archival research and interviews with Lee's family and police colleagues, presents a captivating portrait of Lee.

Each topic is clearly and succinctly explained in the text, illustrated with captions, charts, diagrams, and finished paintings. By the end of the book, the reader will have a clear understanding of how realist painters and illustrators have used color through history." - James Gurney, artist and author “This is the most impressive and complete book on color ever produced. Casey then breaks down the process of understanding color into easily digestible lessons—each clearly explained and richly illustrated with both historic and contemporary paintings—so that the reader can learn progressively and layer more complex ideas as each skill is achieved. Through clear instruction, step-by-step demonstrations, and challenging exercises, readers will learn to apply these techniques and concepts to their own painting. This informative and visually dynamic book will be accessible and appealing to artists, art students, and art instructors, to serious amateurs and hobbyists.

New Surrealism: The Uncanny in Contemporary Painting by Robert Zeller offers a sweeping exposition of both historical Surrealism and its legacy in the world of contemporary artIt demonstrates the many ways in which the most significant art movement of the last century continues to be relevant today, featuring an international selection of contemporary artists whose compositions and studio practice reveal its influence. There are many modalities of historical Surrealism that still maintain contemporary currency: presenting the familiar as unfamiliar and uncanny, the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated imagery, the use of absurdity to critique political or social issues, and the use of erotic imagery in an irrational, non-linear context. Not all the artists brought together in this book self-identify as Surrealist, per se, but each uses some variation of Surrealism in a personal manner. The book begins with a study of the origins, leadership, participating artists, and major milestones of historical Surrealism. Zeller chronicles the movement starting at the end of World War I and the birth of Dada. The most important players and events emerge throughout the timeline of events—including World War II, and such notable artists as Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp, Leonora Carrington, and many others—up until the death of its leader Andre Breton in 1966. Zeller then explores how elements of New Surrealism are being put into practice in the contemporary art world.Section Two offers a survey of 29 contemporary artists who engage in New Surrealism’s seemingly unlimited variations of the movement’s original themes, including Rosa Loy, Glenn Brown, and Arghavan Khosravi. Section Three features 14 artists, including important contemporary artists such as Inka Essenhigh, Ginny Casey and Anna Weyant, who speak to Surrealism’s influence on their studio practice, detailing in their own words how they create a composition from start to finish.

Landscapes in Oil is the first-ever comprehensive guide to classical landscape painting reinterpreted for the twenty-first century. Drawing from the tradition established by American painters of the Hudson River School - artists like Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and George Inness - author and painter Ken Salaz reveals great masters' philosophy and methods, updating their approaches for the contemporary landscape painter. Beginning painters are given the basic tools and step-by-step demonstrations, intermediate painters are challenged with unpublished techniques that allow them to break through to the next level, and advanced painters learn to apply their skills under unified theories. Landscapes in Oil devotes a chapter to each of the fundamental elements of landscape painting - drawing, value, color, composition, and light quality - and offers critical advice on selecting tools and materials, choosing colors, and structuring your palette for best results. Emphasizing the necessity of plein air drawing and painting, Salaz demonstrates how to translate small, quick studies made outdoors into full-scale studio paintings. He provides detailed step-by-step breakdowns of the creation of four of his own paintings, focusing not only on application but also on the ideas that underpin every decision a landscape painter must make. The scores of landscape masterworks, past and present, that illustrate this book have been carefully chosen for their aesthetic power and because each embodies a specific aspect of the landscape painter's craft. For Salaz, landscape painting is a noble pursuit, and the goal of the landscape artist is not to paint "pretty pictures" but to create compelling images that express human beings' profound connection to nature in all its diversity and grandeur. At a time when classical landscape is enjoying a renaissance in art schools, ateliers, and galleries across North America, this book is an essential resource for beginning and experienced painters alike.

As Casey reminds his students: ‘The purpose of knowledge is action.’

A renewed examination of Jeffrey Deitch’s pivotal exhibitionOriginally exhibited in 1992, Jeffrey Deitch’s groundbreaking exhibition Post Human brought together the work of thirty-six young artists interested in new frontiers of body and identity transformation. The prescient exhibition, which traveled to five international venues, introduced the art world to posthumanism - how the human body continues to merge with and diverge from technology. Both the show and it catalogue, which featured a unique visual essay and innovative design, helped set the agenda for art discourse in the 1990s.More than thirty years later, Deitch revitalized Post Human at his Los Angeles gallery, bringing the themes of the original back to the present. The show’s 2024 iteration presented several key figures who participated in the original exhibition in dialogue with emerging contemporary artists whose boundary-pushing work explores how these themes, particularly recent forms of technology such as AI, have evolved over the course of the twenty-first century. This timely publication revisits artworks from both iterations of the show. Readers will discover color photography of the featured works, along with Deitch’s iconic visual essay from the original catalogue and text contributions from contemporary philosopher Rosi Braidotti and critic Philippa Snow. Together, they form a printed testament to the show’s indelible impact and Deitch’s everlasting influence on the art world.Featured artists include: Isabelle Albuquerque, Matthew Barney, Ivana Bašić, Frank Benson, Ashley Bickerton, Maurizio Cattelan, Chris Cunningham, John Currin, Alex Da Corte, Olivia Erlanger, Jana Euler, Rachel Feinstein, Urs Fischer, Pippa Garner, Robert Gober, Hugh Hayden, Damien Hirst, Tishan Hsu, Pierre Huyghe, Anne Imhof, Alex Israel, Arthur Jafa, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Mike Kelley, Josh Kline, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Sam McKinniss, Mariko Mori, Takashi Murakami, Wangechi Mutu, Cady Noland, Charles Ray, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Hajime Sorayama, Anna Uddenberg, Cajsa von Zeipel, Jeff Wall, Jordan Wolfson, and Anicka Yi.

The first comprehensive monograph on the American artist Eddie Martinez, spanning two decades of paintingThis debut monograph on contemporary American artist Eddie Martinez celebrates two decades of work by the artist, whose energetic, improvisational paintings have made him one of the most compelling of his generation. Focusing solely on his paintings, divided into key themes, the volume traces the evolution of an artist whose expressionist canvases—at once raw and refined, and bold, yet intimate—expand the language of contemporary abstract and figurative art while conversing facilely with the much-lauded art history that precedes it.Martinez’s practice is rooted in an unguarded physicality. Strong lines, insistent gestures, fields of saturated color, and washes in whites and blacks collide in compositions that purposely intermingle the spontaneous and the meticulously orchestrated. Over the years, he has developed a signature approach that fuses the everyday with the art-historical: cartoon-like outlines and familiar domestic motifs appear alongside dense painterly passages, nodding to urban life, personal memory, and the lineage of painters he admires. In addition to the artist himself contributing revealing anecdotes about some of his personally noteworthy paintings, the monograph also features new essays by esteemed writers Dan Nadel and Ross Simonini, each offering a distinct vantage point on Martinez’s evolution as an artist and his contribution to painting.Eddie Martinez: 20 Years of Painting offers an immersive journey through the progression of an artist working at the height of his powers. Richly illustrated and rigorously contextualized, it serves as both a long-awaited retrospective and an essential foundation for understanding a painter whose work feels urgent, generous, and profoundly alive.

Since its publication - Delirious New York (1978) has attained mythic status. Rem Koolhaas's celebration and analysis of New York depicts the city as a metaphor for the variety of human behaviorAt the end of the nineteenth century, population, information, and technology explosions made Manhattan a laboratory for the invention and testing of a metropolitan lifestyle - "the culture of congestion" - and its architecture. "Manhattan," he writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta Stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Koolhaas interprets and reinterprets the dynamic relationship between architecture and culture in a number of telling episodes of New York's history, including the imposition of the Manhattan grid, the creation of Coney Island, and the development of the skyscraper.Delirious New York is also packed with intriguing and fun facts and illustrated with witty watercolors and quirky archival drawings, photographs, postcards, and maps. The spirit of this visionary investigation of Manhattan equals the energy of the city itself.

The most thoroughgoing survey of nearly all of Le Corbusier's extant projects, beautifully photographed and authoritatively detailedLe Corbusier is widely acknowledged as the most influential architect of the twentieth century. As extensively researched and documented as his works are, however, they have never been exhaustively surveyed in photographs until now.Photographer Richard Pare has crossed the globe for years to document the extant works of Le Corbusier - from his first villas in Switzerland to his mid-career works in his role as the first global architect in locations as far-flung as Argentina and Russia, and his late works, including his sole North American project, at Harvard University, and an extensive civic plan for Chandigarh, India.Le Corbusier: The Built Work provides numerous views of each project to bring a fuller understanding of the architect's command of space, sometimes surprising use of materials and color, and the almost ineffable qualities that only result from a commanding synthesis of all aspects of design. With an authoritative text by scholar and curator Jean-Louis Cohen, Le Corbusier: The Built Work is a groundbreaking opportunity to appreciate the master's work anew.

A new, evocative take on American country style that is enchantingly unexpected and confidently chicWe think we know American country style. The houses in this book politely flout our expectations. Bypassing the expected cues and nostalgic shorthand, the 23 stunning residences included in At Home in Nature are unfussy, calm, confident, and a little unexpected—modern in a way that feels totally timeless and utterly chic.Across nearly 300 pages, author Hudson Moore offers a visual tour of rural retreats, ranches, and cottages designed by some of today’s leading tastemakers, with interiors shaped by their bucolic surroundings. A West Texas residence decorated by Jeffrey Bilhuber mixes fine-boned antiques with contemporary pieces, while Libby Cameron’s shingled, whitewashed Maine cottage features art leaned on shelves, painted wicker mingling with painted floors, and doors left open to Atlantic breezes. From the walls and windows to the smallest details, each home reflects the unique touch of the designer, architect, or creative talent who brought it to life.Taken together, homes in this book make a quiet case for an American country aesthetic that is both enduringly grounded and unmistakably current. They speak to their settings not just through decoration, but through the decisions behind them—what to keep, what to leave out, and how a room should feel at the end of the day. As seen in The New York TimesA lavish portfolio of never-before-seen erotic drawings by celebrated twentieth-century American artist and gay icon, Paul CadmusPaul Cadmus entered the art scene in the 1930s with paintings of dream-like urban demi-mondes: roiling tableaux of beatniks, sailors, and prostitutes. Undergirding his work has always been the artist’s masterful draftsmanship, seen in hundreds of drawings of nude male models, chief among them his long-time lover and muse, Jon Anderson. Paul Cadmus: 49 Drawings collects these never-before-seen drawings for the first time, presenting a singular body of work that exemplifies Cadmus’s classical proficiency, channeled into an obsessive emphasis of his model’s erotic zones.Packaged in a stamped portfolio envelope, this is a landmark collection of queer art by a twentieth-century master, its images complemented by an introduction by Graham Steele that details the significance of Paul Cadmus to his career in the art world, plus an essay by leading queer-art scholar Richard Meyer, as well as a momentous discussion with painters Nash Glynn, Doron Langberg, and Oscar yi Hou, moderated by curator and critic Jarrett Earnest. This elegant book, sumptuously produced to reflect the eminence of this newly revealed body of work, and the intimacy of its subject matter, represents a rare exposé of a significant body of unknown work from a major twentieth-century artist, and a substantial contribution to the study and legacy of queer art.

He reminds artists to slow down, notice, and attend to the sketch-worthy scenes and subjects that are unstaged and always there in our everyday lives. He offers a versatile technique that can lead to a skill that fills sketchbooks with the visual details that differentiate one life from another. This approach is a meditative, relaxing alternative to academic concerns about perspective, proportion, and accuracy.Reddy encourages artists to capture in whimsical but detail-specific illustrations their unique, subjective interpretation of their visual surroundings. Steven Reddy's drawing method produces extremely detailed and realistic scenes of objects and scenes in everyday life in a relatively short period of time (60 minutes to 3 hours or more, depending on the sketcher's preference). Modifying a technique utilized by Old Master oil painters, the drawings pass through 5 clearly articulated stages where each step focuses on one visual concept at a time.
