    Aquaponics: Farming Fish and Growing Greens for Grades 9–12 teaches STEM-related course material through aquaponics, a water-based agricultural system that combines aquaculture (fish production) and hydroponics (soilless vegetable production) systems. This curriculum is aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and designed to be used with an onsite aquaponics system. Topics include an introduction to aquaculture, fundamental parts of an aquaponics system, the nitrogen cycle, water quality, population dynamics, our modern food system, and more. The ten lessons presented build on each other and are intended to be delivered in sequential order. Alternatively, lessons may also be utilized as stand-alone units to supplement other curricular activities.

    Amy M. Shambach is an Extension associate at Purdue University with the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) Program. She has a background in aquaculture production and works with the aquaculture industry in the USDA's North Central Region. Her current work focuses on the demand side of domestic farm-raised seafood products, consumer education, aquaculture production, and K–12 education.Rebecca M. Ward is a lecturer in general chemistry at The Ohio State University. Prior to joining OSU, Ward built aquaponic systems in K–12 public schools, designed accompanying curriculum, wrote scripts for educational science videos, and oversaw the upper-division chemistry labs at Mississippi State University.J. Stuart Carlton is the director of the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) College Program and head of the Coastal and Great Lakes Social Science Lab in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University, where he also serves as a research assistant professor. His lab group studies the relationship between knowledge, values, trust, and behavior in complex or controversial environmental systems.Kwamena K. Quagrainie is a professor of aquaculture economics and an aquaculture marketing specialist at Purdue University. He is also affiliated with the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) College Program. His research is interdisciplinary and focuses on market analysis, market definition, identification of value-added opportunities for aquaculture products, and the economic viability of aquaculture and aquaponics farming enterprises.Tomas O. Höök is professor and department head in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University, where his research and teaching areas of expertise include fisheries and aquatic sciences of the Laurentian Great Lakes. Prior to joining Purdue, he worked at the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystems Research. Höök previously served as the associate director of research and then director of Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant.
