This brilliantly written book takes the reader through a historical, geographical, ethnic, and feminist journey of the Muslim women in the Deccan. At a time when India’s gender indices are at their bleakest, a deep dive into the obstacles that women face provides a holistic perspective that scholars and policy makers need. It is with this understanding that helps find solutions to low work force participation rates, poor political empowerment, and health risks among Indian women today. The sources used for producing this volume are fascinating – old journals, popular magazines, oral recounting, and historical texts. It is an amazingly refreshing addition to literature on the little studied topic of understating Muslim women and the contextual challenges they face.
