“In the 50s and early 60s, LPs were an expensive commodity. Stored in a wire LP rack might be the Black & White Minstrels, Cliff and the Shads, soundtracks, stage shows and occasional jazz albums. The rise of The Beatles and Stones – plus teenagers with cash to spend – saw LPs with 12 memorable tracks with sleevenotes usually penned by PR departments. By the end of the 60s LPs had become something to seriously listen to, and study. Barker's encyclopaedia compiles all charting artists, compilations, soundtracks, stage shows, samplers, TV and radio shows, budget releases, chart placings, release dates, record labels, track lists, indexes, original prices in 'old money' taken from the LP charts of NME, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, Disc & Music Echo. What you might call dedicated research!” -- Tony Burke, Record Collector (February 2026)
