Elfriede Hermann was Professor at the Institute of Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Göttingen and conducted research with the Ngaing of Papua New Guinea, the Banabans of Rabi Island (Fiji) and Banaba Island (Kiribati), and the inhabitants of Kiribati.
