Recensioner i media
The essays in this volume emerged from a 2022 conference held as part of the CLASP project (A Consolidated Library of Anglo Saxon Poetry [https://clasp.ell.ox.ac.uk/]). Most of the contributions reflect the focus of that project, which facilitates identification of metrical and verbal patterns contextualized by the manuscript evidence. The contributions are strongest where they make very specific arguments drawing on textual and metrical evidence and also offer sensitive readings. The volume is a pleasure to use in printed and electronic form. The open-access, Creative Commons–licensed ebook is a PDF that downloads without fuss and does not require a special app or reader. Both formats have footnotes right on the page, and there are clearly arranged bibliographies for each chapter and for the book as a whole.[...]I mean no criticism of the collection as published when I say I finished it wishing for one more chapter to tackle, or at least raise, some big questions. The one top of mind is this: What is dis- tinctively poetic for early Anglo-Latin authors? Many of the topics treated here brush up against this question. Is markedness any more a characteristic of verse than of prose in this tra- dition? That I am left wanting (someone) to tackle bigger questions suggests that Colleen M. Curran’s editorial wish—that the reader be inspired to further study—has been fulfilled.
