Exodus Story

The Exodus Story examines how the second book of the Hebrew Bible has prompted and inspired human action, whether in the domestic setting of the Passover meal or in the wider political or artistic themes of exile and the search for freedom.Fifteen essays explore aspects of the Exodus myth from medieval ritual and custom to more modern perspectives, such as the story's influence on Russan Jewish migration and the civil rights movement. Each essay is handsomely illustrated: early chapters with Egyptian papyri and pages from bibles and haggadahs; later chapters with works by artists from Michelangelo to Marc Chagall and Anselm Kiefer, and images from films such as DeMille's Ten Commandments and Preminger's Exodus.
