Conflict is a well-trod theme in the study of nineteenth-century Ireland and ‘the Irish’. While this is especially clear in the more traditional fields of politics, religion and the military, conflict was equally manifest in every arena of Irish people’s lives, both in Ireland and abroad, including in areas such as gender, class, culture and identity in domestic or personal spaces, institutional life, education and medicine. Paul Huddie is an ERC Research Project Manager at the University College Dublin Centre for War Studies and a historical researcher interested in war and society, principally within the long nineteenth century. Cathal Billings is a lecturer in modern Irish at University College Dublin. His research focuses on the history of the Irish language revival, Irish sports history and translation. Arlene Crampsie is a lecturer in historical geography at University College Dublin. Her research sits at the intersection of political, socio-cultural and environmental geographies, highlighting the evolution of everyday lives and landscapes.
