Above 8,000 metres lies the death zone - a place where oxygen levels are so low prolonged human survival becomes impossible. It is here, in the world's highest mountains of the Himalaya and Karakoram Region, that the death zone guides' work. Professionals who lead clients through some of the most dangerous environments on Earth, carrying responsibility not only for their own survival but also the lives of others. For decades, stories of the death zone have focused on climbers, expeditions, triumphs, and tragedies. Historians, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, tourism scholars and mountaineers have all sought to understand why people voluntarily venture into these extreme environments.
