    Beskrivning

Social class is a neglected, misunderstood, yet overwhelmingly powerful factor in the United States. In Everyone Has Class Allison L. Hurst and Sean McCloud draw on both personal stories and insights from recent studies to recount the many ways class influences American life. The authors explore the material conditions we live in, the social relationships we develop, and the unconscious and conscious psychological and physical habits we form based on our social class location. Each chapter reveals the profound presence and complex influence of social class—beyond that of money, education, and occupation—providing readers with an understanding of what social class is and how it operates in our everyday lives.Starting with "what is class?" in chapter one, personal narratives alongside interviews with key researchers and scholars allow entrée for everyone to the meaning of the term class, the impact of class, and the broader applications and perspectives within the study of class. Can one overcome class? Does recognizing its effects allow us to navigate our own social standing? Through twelve stand-alone chapters, Hurst and McCloud show how class shapes and influences both individual and social lives in consequential ways.

    Recensioner i media

"Everyone Has Class is the groundbreaking book I've been waiting for: a multidimensional, intersectional overview of the American class system and the pervasive classism of our society." —Betsy Leondar-Wright, social justice activist and author of Missing Class: Strengthening Social Movement Groups by Seeing Class Cultures"Powerful, engaging, relatable—and right! Class shapes everyone in ways few people realize. Everyone Has Class links the lived experience of class in all its different manifestations to the often-unnoticed forces that produce it. I can't think of another book that manages to do both so well and so accessibly." —Andrew Sayer, author of Why We Can't Afford the Rich"Allison Hurst and Sean McCloud have done a wonderful job examining how social class has been and is still part of modern-day America. Their scholarly review of extensive research is thorough, informative, and accessible." —Dwight Lang, contributor to This Fine Place So Far from Home: Voices of Academics from the Working Class"Everyone Has Class is a profound and passionate synthesis of the history, sociology, and economics of class inequality disguised as an introductory text for the person on the street. Written in plain, often conversational, language, it does not hesitate to unravel all sorts of complex facts and ideas about every aspect of social class. If there are still any 'persons on the street,' I hope they find this book." —Jack Metzgar, author of Striking Steel: Solidarity Remembered"Across twelve chapters, Hurst and McCloud draw on great body of empirical studies, pop culture examples, and illustrative anecdotes from their own lives to engage the reader in the ways that class plays out in daily life. Written in clear and approachable language, this book makes an excellent source for those who want to understand our current class landscape and the complexities of their own experiences." —Elizabeth M. Lee, author of Class and Campus Life: Managing and Experiencing Inequality at an Elite College
