Epigenetic modifications comprise heritable gene expression changes that occur without alteration of the DNA sequence and 'co-act' with genetic factors to shape development processes and evolutionary trajectories. These environmentally driven mechanisms represent an underlying cause of phenotypic diversity, especially in metazoans.
