    Beskrivning

This book outlines Nepal Himalaya's rich tradition of natural dyes and pigments, examining their historical roots, chemical properties, and diverse applications. By focusing on the sustainable use of natural dyes, it highlights their potential to foster a greener economy and create economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas. The chapters cover a wide range of topics, including the history and origin of natural dyes, their advantages and disadvantages, and the chemistry that distinguishes them from synthetic alternatives. Readers will gain insights into various dye extraction techniques, from traditional methods to advanced processes like solvent and ultrasonic procedures. The book also discusses the characterization of natural dyes, exploring analytical methods crucial for assessing their stability, safety, and quality. Additionally, it examines the chemistry of mordants, including natural, metallic, and nanomordants, which play a vital role in enhancing color adhesion. The adaptability of natural dyes is showcased through their applications in textiles, food, cosmetics, and even modern energy technologies such as dye-sensitized solar cells. The final chapter evaluates the scope and feasibility of natural dyeing in Nepal, considering both traditional practices and industrial-scale sustainability.By preserving historic practices, this book aims to increase awareness of the environmental benefits of natural dyes and encourage their broad adoption. It is an important resource for researchers, students, craftsmen, environmentalists, and industrialists interested in sustainable coloring practices. It offers valuable insights for scholars of natural sciences and practitioners in the textile industry, providing the knowledge needed to integrate natural dyes into their work and daily life.

Netra Lal Bhandari is working as a researcher and faculty of organic chemistry at the Central Department of Chemistry, Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu, Nepal. Dr. Bhandari received his MSc in chemistry (organic and natural products) in 2003 and his PhD in natural fiber-based polymer composites in 2014 (in collaboration with research institutes in India, Germany, and France) at TU, Nepal. His research primarily focuses on plant fibers, fiber modifications, fiber composites, the extraction and use of essential oils in cosmetics, and the development of green methods for extracting plant dyes for use in dyeing fabrics, textiles, hairs, and other materials. He has published over 30 scientific research papers, including reviews. He is an active reviewer and supervisor of MSc and PhD research students. Ganesh Bhandari is a PhD scholar working on energy conversion and storage at the Department of Nano Convergence Engineering, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju, South Korea. Bhandari received his MSc in chemistry (organic chemistry) in 2019 from Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, Tribhuvan University (TU), Kathmandu, Nepal. He completed his MSc dissertation on natural dye extraction from plants and their use for fibre/fabric dyeing and composite preparation under the fellowship of the Province Planning Commission, National Youth Council, Nepal, and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, Kathmandu, Nepal. His research mainly focuses on plant-natural dye extraction, fibre and fabric dyeing, composite preparation, and preparation of electrocatalyst for water splitting. He has published over 18 scientific research papers, including reviews.Maan Bahadur Rokaya is working as a research scientist at the Institute of Botany, Czech Academy of Sciences. Dr. Rokaya received his M.Sc. In Botany (Plant Taxonomy and Systematics) from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal in 2001 and his Ph. D in Plant Ecology from Charles University in Prague in 2011. His research mainly focused on plant population dynamics of important plant species, herbivory patterns along elevational gradients, effects of climate change on plant species, and uses of plants for human benefits, mainly in Nepal Himalayas.
