Beskrivning
Vigilance is often understood as the focused attention of an individual. This volume offers a different perspective, showing how vigilance emerges through the interaction of people, animals, technologies, spaces, and norms. Bringing together contributions from History, Sociology, Environmental Studies, and Social and Cultural Anthropology, the volume develops the concept of constellations of vigilance through case studies ranging from ancient Assyria to the present. The chapters reconstruct diverse arrangements of vigilance in which attention is organised, knowledge is produced, and responsibility negotiated. They demonstrate the historical variability of vigilant practices and explore their implications for questions of agency, power, perception, and more-than-human participation.
