Beskrivning
Before the Folkwang founder Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874–1921) collected the Impressionists, he had begun to assemble a significant collection of Islamicate art. This volume opens up the scope and influence of this early European collection, reveals its diversity and critically interrogates the holdings from a contemporary perspective. Works of classical modernism, European design and contemporary pieces broaden the historical context. A wide-ranging overview of Museum Folkwang’s magnificent collection – one that enchants and inspires. Artists: Alī Akbar b. Muḥammad Ṣādiq al-Isfahānī, Alī Akbar b. Muḥammad Ṣādiq al-Tunikābunī, Dana Awartani, Peter Behrens, Brend’amour Simhart, Paula Deetjen, Julius Diez, Else Lasker-Schüler, Henri Matisse, Juan and Diego Pulido, Gertrud Osthaus, Franz Stoedtner, Bruno Taut, Johan Thorn Prikker, et al.

Mer om författaren

The Museum Folkwang is one of the most renowned German art museums with an outstanding collection of 19th century painting and sculpture, classical modernism and art after 1945, as well as photography. In addition, the Museum Folkwang also houses comprehensive collections of graphic art, archaeology, world art and decorative arts as well as posters. The Folkwang idea, coined by Karl Ernst Osthaus at the beginning of the 20th century, comprises three central guidelines: the dialogue of the arts and cultures, the museum as a place of exchange and cultural education, and the unity of art and life.
