How do perceptions of the self and the other shape one another? This study addresses this question by employing the triad YHWH–Israel–nations as an analytical and interpretive framework, and offers the first systematic investigation of the oracles against the Philistines. Using a synchronic and canonical approach, it analyzes these texts and provides an overview of Israel’s encounters with the Philistines. The findings show that the Philistines function not only as neighbors, foreigners, and enemies, but also as mirrors of Israel’s self-perception. By combining sociological, literary, and intertextual perspectives, the study demonstrates how complex relational frameworks of identity, foreignness, and self-reflection are constructed.
