Hollow Victory

Hollow Victory offers the first comprehensive account of how the Union Cause—once celebrated as a triumph of democracy and racial justice—was gradually eclipsed in American memory. Drawing on extensive research, Robert J. Cook traces how Union veterans, African Americans, and Republican politicians fought to preserve the legacy of the Civil War as a righteous struggle against slavery and rebellion and how their efforts were undermined by political fragmentation, cultural reconciliation with the South, and the rise of Jim Crow. From Memorial Day rituals and Union monuments to the erasure of Black contributions and the repurposing of Unionist rhetoric for imperialist ends, Cook reveals how the victors lost control of the war’s narrative. By the early 20th century, the Union’s moral clarity had faded into a sentimental tale of white brotherhood, leaving behind a legacy of forgotten justice. Timely and provocative, Hollow Victory speaks directly to today’s debates over historical memory, racial equity, and the meaning of patriotism.
