Beskrivning
There is a version of your life that works, and it is not yours.  You have a life that runs. People depend on it. You are good at it, and on paper there is nothing to fix. And in some unremarkable hour, driving home, or shopping in the boot of the car, or standing in a kitchen at ten past seven with your coat still on, you catch yourself being slightly somebody else.  This book has a name for that. It is a translation: the small adjustment of who you are so that you are the person the hour requires. The voice lowered by a notch. The opinion not offered. The competence played down. Every one of them is a kindness, or a survival, or both, and every one of them is paid for, and in eleven years nobody has ever added the payments up.  The instruction you have been given is to find a life that feels like yours. This book argues that the instruction cannot be carried out, because it has the order backwards. The feeling is not a signal that arrives first and tells you which life to choose. It arrives last, and only after a life has been lived in long enough for the place to take your shape.  That leaves three things to look at, and the book gives you instruments for each one. The translation, which turns out to be countable. The pattern, which is the shape your life was cut from and which you almost certainly did not draw. And the wearing, which is the repetition, and which is the only thing that has ever made anything yours.  Ten tools, each one a page and a pen, in the order they build. A one-week count that produces a number nobody has ever asked you for. Five load-bearing facts with a name and a year beside each one. The dress form of the woman your life was cut to fit, and the subtraction that follows. A verdict about yourself from 1994, put on trial with evidence. A trial period written down before the discomfort arrives, so that the daily vote is removed. Four questions that are allowed to give you an answer you do not want. A seam tested for whether it needs holding or letting out. A crate you have moved house with twice and never opened. Two weeks of hours in which you did not have to perform. And a mending small enough that nobody in the house will notice.  Six women carry the book, and not one of them is a composite of the others. Rudo, a midwife in Harare who runs a delivery room where twelve people do what she says, and who is serving tea to an uncle with opinions ninety seconds after she gets home. Chiara, a piano tuner in Bologna who kept the flat she grew up in for her father, and who has been told for years that the problem is her ear. Marisol, who has sung on ships out of Cebu for eighteen years and does not know which country is hers. Zuzana, a watch repairer in Brno who decided at nineteen that she was not a person who could do certain things, and who has lived inside that verdict for twenty-two years. Halldora, who has taught half of Reykjavik to swim and has never once read her own list out loud. And Nuria, a crane operator in Bilbao whose chapter does not get fixed, because a book that only works for women whose lives can be mended has lied about its own range.  This book will not tell you to leave anybody. It will not tell you that the feeling is guaranteed. It will not tell you that you are secretly more powerful than you think. What it will do is give you a count, a description, and a record that cannot be argued with, and it will say plainly that a woman who has written her own number down is not in the same position as a woman who has not.  For readers of Designing Your Life, The Gifts of Imperfection, and the belonging shelf.
