Beskrivning
A provocative guide to the future of community college reform and the transformative partnerships necessary for successBeyond the College Walls is a forward-looking volume for community college presidents, trustees, faculty, and staff leaders who are ready to build powerful ecosystems of support for students and their communities. Grounded in two decades of completion-focused reform, the disruption and reset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and emerging models from across the country, the contributors argue that community colleges must dramatically expand and transform their relationships with employers, community organizations, and civic and political allies to achieve meaningful economic mobility for low-income and underserved learners. This accessible, practice-informed collection weaves together research, institutional case studies, and first-person perspectives from the field. Opening chapters take stock of the community college reform movement since the early 2000s, examining the gains and limitations of the completion agenda, the mounting pressures facing colleges, and how the pandemic both exposed the precariousness of students' lives and revealed colleges' capacity for rapid, large-scale innovation. Later chapters, paired with short "Essays from the Field," highlight innovative models of external partnership that move beyond episodic collaboration toward long-term, mutually beneficial alliances. Field leaders and community college presidents explore place-based engagement with underserved communities, new frameworks for co-designing pathways to good jobs with regional employers, and strategies for building durable coalitions that can secure resources and advocate for broader social and economic reforms. From lessons and innovations like these, the editors distill a set of five principles to guide the next phase of community college reform. Presenting an ambitious vision for the next decade of learner-centered community college improvement, this volume will help leaders forge lasting partnerships that improve outcomes for a broader group of current and future students.

"Beyond the College Walls is an essential read for anyone who wishes to know what the future holds for community colleges. In this book of essays, the authors assert that the continued success of community colleges will hinge on how well they can fuse two decades of internal institutional reform with external partnerships to benefit low-income students." - Jim Jacobs"Community colleges have long guarded access to higher education—but this compelling book makes clear that guardianship isn't enough. Our future demands a new mission imperative: fusing our institutional destiny to the holistic vibrancy of the communities we serve. Access opened the door; prosperity must now walk through it." - DeRionne P. Pollard"The next chapter of community college reform begins with a simple but powerful question: What outcomes should colleges aim to produce? By urging readers to start with the end in mind, this collection helps shift the conversation from measuring institutional success primarily by credentials earned to asking how effectively community colleges, in partnership with employers and others, achieve the outcomes that matter most: thriving lives, family-sustaining careers, success in further education, and the talent that strengthens communities and regional prosperity." - Josh Wyner"Community colleges have long been the largest, most durable, and frequently the most effective pillar of America's workforce development system. But how can they navigate challenges resulting from new technologies, shifts in funding streams, new demands on the part of employers, and transformations flowing from the pandemic? The essays in Beyond the College Walls offer powerful practical answers. The editors and chapter authors have deep practical experience and are nationally recognized experts. This book offers a path forward for uncertain times and shows how community colleges can continue to be the go-to institution for workers and employers alike." - Paul Osterman"Eddinger, Kazis and McCarthy provide a detailed examination of the challenges and transformative strategies for community colleges to expand their role in promoting economic mobility and student success through data-driven decision making, guided pathways and programmatic reforms. They also illustrate how redefining proximity to include physical, financial, and social connections helps students feel more connected, supported and closer to reaching their educational goals. The contribution of this critical dialogue serves to lift up the value of community colleges as being central to the prosperity of the larger communities they serve, and to create a future of hope and promise that only access to educational opportunities can provide." - Audrey J. "A.J." Jaeger
