This story is a micro-historic narrative about an individual’s human destiny in an institutional setting, which aims to offer an insight into a sanatory stay about ninety years ago, described by a young woman, 19 years old, suffering from tuberculosis. She described her stay at the sanatorium in personal letters to her family. Mainly, two themes are illustrated, the care routines and her friendship relations that developed during her stay. Her described stay and treatment is discussed in relation to Goffman’s concepts of a total institution, social relations between staff and patients and stigma, Foucault’s concepts disciplinary techniques and bio power, as well as Parsons’ sick role. In the letters, the treatment of the sanatorium is presented as an interplay between the medical treatment with focus on the best for the single patient, the nursing staff and the daily routines. Besides, despite being a patient she saw herself as a student even in the future rather than a sick person. Important for her personal well-being was her fighting spirit, her social relations with other patients and the emotional support from her family. Described in letters is a world of women.

The book investigates historical patterns of vowel diphthongization, assimilation and dissimilation induced by consonants – mostly (alveolo)palatals – in Romance. Compiling data from dialectal descriptions, old documentary sources and experimental phonetic studies, it explains why certain vowels undergo raising assimilation before (alveolo)palatal consonants more than others. It also suggests that in French, Francoprovençal, Occitan, Rhaetoromance and dialects from northern Italy, mid low vowel diphthongization before (alveolo)palatal consonants started out with the formation of non-canonical falling diphthongs through off-glide insertion, from which rising diphthongs could emerge at a later date (e.g., Upper Engadinian OCTO ‘eight’ > [ɔc] > [ɔ(ə̯)c] > [wac]). Both diphthongal types, rather than canonical falling diphthongs with a palatal off-glide, could also give rise to high vowels (dialectal French [li] < LECTU, [fuj] < FOLIA). This same Gallo-Romance diphthongization process operated in Catalan ([ʎit], [ˈfuʎə]). In Spanish, on the other hand, mid low vowels followed by highly constrained (alveolo)palatals became too close to undergo the diphthongization process ([ˈletʃo], [ˈoxa]).

This book collects all the main aspects of these operators in a single volume for the first time. The stress is put on the study of their structure and the monograph starts presenting the different ways in which indistinguishability operators can be generated and represented. Ein bisher unbekannter Artikel Hugo Balls über den Monte Verità und Balls Verstrickung in die deutsche Politik nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bilden Schwerpunkte des neuen Hugo-Ball-Almanachs.Der Namensgeber des Almanachs steht im Mittelpunkt der neuen Ausgabe: Während seiner Zeit im Tessin beobachtete Hugo Ball genau, was in der Künstlerkolonie auf dem benachbarten Monte Verità passierte. Das esoterische Treiben dort sah er mit einiger Skepsis, wie sein jetzt aufgefundener Artikel aus dem Jahr 1917 zeigt. Balls sich daran anschließendes politisches Engagement bis 1919 endete ernüchtert, was eine eingehende Darstellung deutlich macht. In zwei weiteren Beiträgen zu Balls Werk wird sein Drama "Der Henker von Brescia" (1914) in der norditalienischen Stadt verortet sowie dem historischen Vorbild für die Titelfigur seines Varieté-Romans "Flametti oder vom Dandysmus der Armen" (1918) nachgegangen. Darüber hinaus findet sich im neuen Almanach ein umfangreicher Aufsatz über den Avantgarde- Maler und -Zeichner Max Oppenheimer, der 1916 zu den Mitbegründern des Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich gehört hat, und ein Beitrag zu den grotesken Erzählwelten des Dadaisten Walter Mehring. Der aktuelle Band dokumentiert zudem die künstlerische Arbeit des heutigen Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich im vergangenen Jahr. Abschließend werden im Rezensionsteil die jüngsten Publikationen zu Hugo Ball und Dada besprochen.

Die langjahrige Verbundenheit der Kunstlerpaare Hans Arp und Sophie Taeuber-Arp sowie Hugo Ball und Emmy Ball-Hennings bildet einen thematischen Schwerpunkt des aktuellen Hugo-Ball-Almanachs. Am Beispiel dieser vier Kunstschaffenden wird die besondere Dynamik von Paarkonstellationen untersucht, die sich uber den Tod der Partnerin bzw. des Partners hinaus fortschreibt. Es schlie t sich eine Analyse von Balls bruitistischem "e;Krippenspiel"e; an, das 1916 im Cabaret Voltaire uraufgefuhrt, jedoch erst 70 Jahre spater aus dem Nachlass veroffentlicht wurde und heute als zentraler Text des Dadaismus gilt. Rekonstruiert werden Leben und Werk des an Dada Berlin beteiligten, jedoch kaum bekannten Kunstlers Jefim Golyscheff (1897 1970). Ein weiterer Beitrag zeigt Berlin als Schauplatz mehrerer spektakularer "e;Revolutionsballe"e;, die innerhalb weniger Jahre in verschiedenen kunstlerischen wie gesellschaftspolitischen Kontexten (Sezession, Expressionismus, Raterevolution) stattfanden. Daneben wird Ferdinand Hardekopfs Rezeption des Futurismus belegt, und die vor Kurzem gegrundete Emmy-Hennings-Gesellschaft stellt sich vor. Zudem dokumentiert der aktuelle Band die jungsten kunstlerischen Aktivitaten des heutigen Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich. Abschlie end werden im Rezensionsteil neue Publikationen zu Hugo Ball und Dada besprochen. Neben dem vielfaltigen Werk seines Namensgebers beschaftigt sich der 1977 von der Stadt Pirmasens als Forum der Hugo-Ball-Forschung ins Leben gerufene Hugo Ball Almanach auch mit Autoren und Kunstlern aus dem Umkreis Balls und des Zuricher Dadaismus.
