The long history of interpretation of the three Johannine letters has been largely characterized, at least since Irenaeus in the late second century, by the assumption that the Elder was addressing the Gnostic heresy. In recent years, particularly with the work of Raymond Brown, attention has been focused on the internal schism within the Johannine (or Beloved Disciple''s) community, thus taking the first epistle as a corrective to secessionists'' misguided attempts to read the Gospel of John in an advanced, spiritualizing manner.Birger Olsson returns to a less common perspective, one that views the crisis facing the Elder as a wholly intra-Jewish problem. The Johannine community comprised Jewish believers who regarded Jesus as the long-promised Messiah of Israel, but at some point in the community''s life, under the leadership of one Diotrephes, some members of the community chose to reject this conviction and to entice other members to do likewise. Olsson anchors his thoroughgoing interpretation of the three letters in this conflict among Jewish Christians over the nature of the Messiah and the renewal of Israel''s ancient covenant. Among other things, this implies that the letters were written in reverse order of their numbering.

This volume uncovers the rich yet largely overlooked musical worlds of the late nineteenth century, moving beyond established canons to explore everyday practices in homes, schools, churches, theaters, and public spaces. Bringing together transatlantic perspectives from the United States and the German Empire, it reveals how amateur music-making, popular entertainment, minority cultures, and evolving music markets shaped diverse musical lives. By rethinking traditional historiography, the book draws attention to hidden repertoires and social contexts, highlighting the roles of education, urban culture, and networks of performance. It emphasizes cultural inquiry and develops new methodological approaches to studying marginalized practices. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and case studies, it demonstrates how these "invisible" musical cultures were essential to the formation of modern musical life.

This volume provides a survey of recent experimental and theoretical developments in the rapidly expanding field of heavy ion physics. Prominent experts describe the recent advances from the dynamics of dissipative processes around the Coulomb barrier at the low end of the energy scale all the way up to the physics of the quark-gluon plasma.

The content in Chapter 1–3 is a fairly standard one-semester course on local rings with the goal to reach the fact that a regular local ring is a unique factorization domain. The homological machinery is also supported by Cohen–Macaulay rings and depth. In Chapters 4–6 the methods of injective modules, Matlis duality and local cohomology are discussed. Chapters 7–9 are not so standard and introduce the reader to the generalizations of modules to complexes of modules. Some of Professor Iversen's results are given in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 is about Serre's intersection conjecture. The graded case is fully exposed. The last chapter introduces the reader to Fitting ideals and McRae invariants.

In this book, Birger Pearson argues for the study of Christianity as "e;one of the religions of the world."e; He proposes that the study of the New Testament and the other early Christian literature be moved out of the realm of theology and into the area of comparative research of religion. The book therefore addresses the problematic of Christian origins, that is, the historical process by which a new religion, Christianity, emerges out of an older one, Second Temple Judaism. Included are studies ranging from the prehistory of Christianity (Jesus, together with an illuminating, lengthy, and detailed critical analysis of the work of the Jesus Seminar and the trends in current North American gospel research it reflects) into the New Testament and up to the fourth century. A concluding chapter presents the author's reflections on scholarly methods used in the study of the Christian religion.

The workshop on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems (NLDB)hassince1995providedaforumforacademicandindustrialresearchers and practitioners to discuss the application of natural language to both the development and use of software applications. Theuseofnaturallanguageinrelationtosoftwarehascontributedtoimpr- ing the development of software from the viewpoints of both the developers and the users. Developers bene?t from improvements in conceptual modeling, so- ware validation, natural language program speci?cations, and many other areas. Users bene?t from increased usability of applications through natural language query interfaces, semantic webs, text summarizations, etc. The integration of natural language and information systems has been a - search objective for a long time now. Today, the goal of good integration seems not so far-fetched. This is due mainly to the rapid progress of research in natural language and to the development of new and powerful technologies. The in- gration of natural language and information systems has become a convergent point towards which many researchers from several research areas are focussing.
