Discussions in the West around diversity in the arts often focus on the identities of characters and creators. Henry Lien makes the pathbreaking argument that diversity is about more than just plopping different faces into stories that are 100 percent Western in spirit; it can—and should—encompass diverse structures, themes and values.Using examples ranging from Parasite to The Thousand and One Nights to the Mario video game franchise, Lien shows how storytelling staples in the West, such as the three-act structure and themes of empowerment and change, are far from universal. He introduces the East Asian four-act structure (kishotenketsu), as well as circular and nested structures, and explains how Eastern value systems such as collectivism can dictate form. Spring, Summer, Asteroid, Bird is essential reading for any writer or reader who wants to broaden their understanding of how to tell a satisfying story.

The official behind-the-scenes companion to Asteroid City and the latest volume in the bestselling Wes Anderson Collection seriesAsteroid City—the eleventh feature film from Academy Award–winning director Wes Anderson—follows a group of teen geniuses and their families as they attend the 1955 Junior Stargazers convention in the eponymous dusty hamlet. The events of the film, a representation of a fictional play, also titled Asteroid City, unfold in a parallel narrative to a televised broadcast of the creation of a theatrical production. As the lines between reality and theater blur, the audience is treated to stunning technicolor vistas and stark black and white sets, all while the promise of an extraterrestrial visit hangs overhead. In The Wes Anderson Collection: Asteroid City, the latest entry in The Wes Anderson Collection, cultural critic and New York Times bestselling author Matt Zoller Seitz presents the complete story behind the film’s conception via interviews with Wes Anderson and Jason Schwartzman and illuminating behind-the-scenes photos, ephemera, storyboards, models, miniatures, and artwork.Contributions from Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, and the Junior Stargazers themselves provide reflections on the film’s production and insight into the intricately layered characters.

Asteroids sling through space, celestial debris of diverse origins: leftovers from the formation of the solar system, broken offshoots of parental asteroids, or comets that have lost their glow. For the first time in a popular book, Patricia Barnes-Svarney discloses how some asteroids - rich in precious minerals such as gold and platinum - may one day be lassoed and mined by man. She also explores how the natural resources that abound in some asteroids could possibly support human life, leading to their colonization and use as space stations. One day, too, they may reveal to us the secrets of the origins of life. But if an asteroid merely one kilometer in diameter - about the size of eleven football fields end-to-end - were to smash into Earth, it would mean a global catastrophe. And if a larger asteroid - one the size of Vermont - were to strike, life on our planet would come to an end. We know that we've been struck before - from the large and small impact craters that dot the Earth's major land masses. If, as one theory states, the chance of a major collision is currently about one in ten thousand - similar to that of dying from anesthesia during surgery or of being killed in a car crash during any six-month interval - should we be living in fear? How could we possibly prepare ourselves for such a disaster? Patricia Barnes-Svarney, an asteroid enthusiast since childhood, asserts that the threat is real, and that there are better defenses than those now in place. In Asteroid, she vividly evokes both the perils and fascination of these heavenly bodies that have the power to yield untold rewards - and boundless destruction.

Civilization simply passed through: first a century ago by rail, then in our own century by car... Only a few people stayed, leaving the gas stations and the unneeded cars rusting away everywhere. The decay goes rapidly in the heat, sun, and rain. You have the feeling that in another hundred years there will be nothing of all this left at all." - Wim Wenders (1987)

Dear possible reader of this book, After I wrote my first book, It Came from Beneath the Bed!, my editor asked me to write another one. (Another one! This is hard work! I'd like to see him write another one!) So anyway...in this book the lovable and smart (not to mention talented) wirehaired dachshund puppy named Howie and his friend, the beautiful and brilliant Delilah, face their biggest challenge yet: the Mind Swappers from Asteroid 6!™ Along the way Delilah gets turned into a squirrel and has to beg for acorns. (Hey, don't ask me! Read the book!) Your friend, Howie

A look at the creation and composition of asteroids and the frightening eventuality of a collision with the earth.

Even before the present Administrator of NASA, Daniel Goldin, made the phrase 'better, faster, cheaper' the slogan of at least the Office of Space Science, that same office under the Associate Administrator of Lennard Fisk and its Division of Solar System Exploration under the direction of Wes Huntress had begun a series of planetary spacecraft whose developmental cost, phase CID in the parlance of the trade, was to be held to under $150M. In order to get the program underway rapidly they chose two missions without the open solicitation now the hallmark of the program. One of these two missions, JPL' s Mars Pathfinder, was to be a technology demonstration mission with little immediate science return that would enable later high priority science missions to Mars. Many of the science investigations that were included had significant foreign contributions to keep NASA's cost of the mission within the Discovery budget. The second of these missions and the first to be launched was the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous mission, or NEAR, awarded to Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory. This mission was quite different than Mars Pathfinder, being taken from the list of high priority objectives of the science community and emphasizing the science return and not the technology development of the mission. This mission was also to prove to be well under the $150M phase CID cap.

An updated edition of the groundbreaking, in-depth study of the Great Goddess archetypes, now available for a new generation of astrologers. New edition with updated ephemerides (1930-2050). This book shows how the discovery of the asteroids Ceres, Pallas Athena, Juno, and Vesta coincided with the shift of a woman's role and power in society and the reactivation of the feminine principle. The femininearchetypes were previously the exclusive domain of the Moon and Venus, limited to social roles as mate and mother. The arrival of Pallas Athena (the Goddess of Wisdom) and Vesta (the High Priestess) broke through the confines of woman's stereotypical role. Demetra George shows how the asteroid Goddesses, the Moon, and Venus comprise a mandala of the full expression of the feminine principle. Included in this edition are ephemerides of 16 minor asteroids, an astronomical and astrological portrait of the asteroids in the sign sand houses and in aspect to other planets and asteroids, along with lists of the asteroids' positions in the signs and houses of famous people's charts.
